In the first inning, the Lakers' Jake Carvalho picked up a single with one out to make it look like a possible upset was in the forecast, but back-to-back outs ended the inning and kept the No. 11 Lakers off of the board.
“That was big not getting him in,” Skaneateles coach Tom Warner said. “The two guys we want up couldn't get him in.”
Westhill's offense kept a close eye on Nick Pesarchick's pitches as lead-off batter Dan Karleski took a four-pitch walk to open the night.
He ended up scoring on a fly ball by Mike DeCarr to center field with an out.
The Warriors broke open the game in third inning as they've done the previous two meetings, winning by scores of 18-6 and 8-1. In the third inning, Westhill scored three runs off of one hit - three walks played a big part in the rally.
Greg Schmidt had the long single and scored a run in the third, but the final run of the inning came on a stolen base at home by Mike Mascari.
“That didn't catch us off guard,” Warner said. “That was a key play in the game and we expected it.”
With the score at 5-1 in the top of the sixth, the Lakers tried one more time to pull their fourth straight upset in the playoffs.
With two men on and no outs, however, Westhill went to the bullpen to bring in DeCarr.
“I made a deal with Mike and Pat Lemmo,” Westhill's nine-year head coach Bob Weismore said.
“I told them to decide who to start, but that I would pull them in the sixth. No matter what was going on, perfect game or no-hitter. I just had no worries bringing Mike in. Both deserved to pitch in this.”
DeCarr sat the Lakers down in order as he struck out Owen Stokes to keep Westhill only three outs away from earning its first sectional title since 2007 in which came in the B-1 class.
“That was big,” Warner said. “I got to give credit to DeCarr to get the next three batters out. Big turning point right there.”
Westhill picked up an insurance run in which Ryan Malley scored and it was up to DeCarr to get the final three outs on the mound.
He walked his first batter, but then struck out the final three to advance Westhill's win streak to 25 games on the season.
Skaneateles ends its season at 17-11.
“We're losing Nick and our shortstop,” Warner said. “We'll still have a nucleus intact. I told them this is where you want to be. Let's get back here next year.”
Pesarchick went the distance allowing, just four hits, six runs, walked five, hit a batter and sat down six on strikes.
Jake Bird had a double, while Sean Cooney scored the Lakers' lone run in the fifth off a Nolan Cunningham single, but Cunningham was thrown out at second trying to stretch it for a double. Pesarchick also had a hit.
Lemmo got the start, lasting five innings allowing six hits, a run, walking two and striking out five in the win.
Decarr relieved him and walked a batter, while striking out four.
