A child's education begins at home

Tuesday, June 2, 2009 11:44 PM EDT

My compliments to Mr. Gorney on a well written piece. However, I'm guessing the intended target audience will not read the paper.
Having worked with products of poor uneducated households for nearly 20 years, I have found they are really not interested in “being like you.”

Many are quick to blame the schools for the misbehaviors of their kids.

You talk about use of vocabulary, important as it may be, to see appropriate social skills would also work wonders when it comes to the teachers being able to deal with kids.

If you really want that message to get out, post it on a scratch off lotto ticket dispenser.

" Karl, after skimming thur some of your comments on here,I'am wondering if your just a middle aged, long haired, bitter person? You rant and rave on on about nothing, and you critize, offend and mock others because either they don't agree with you, or just see where most of your pathetic comments come from and tell you so. Maybe you should move from your couch, quit dreaming of being a rock star and do somthing constructive with your life, instead of sitting in front of a computer all day bla,bla bla etc.PS its to bad that some people have a dollar and a dream and buy lottery tickets, you dream of being a rock star, they dream of money, neither will happen. Karl, GOD WILL GET YOU! "

" I was afraid people would latch on to the "poor" label. The most important piece is the uneducated. My older brother spent his first 9 years in a trailer park and is now a Phd in Stats and Prof at Miami Ohio. How much $$$ makes no difference. But when you're dealing with kids that come from generational poverty, it's different. Spend some time with the juvenile justice system kids. Kids coming in at 16yrs old and haven't been to school since 8th grade. The parents keep having the kids and you keep paying the price. "

" Are there any stats on the successes/failures of the Head Start program? The purpose of that program is to prepare children for school when their parents can't/won't prepare them. "

" Dan, I think you are labeling all the POOR kids 'not wanting to be like you'

in many instances, a POOR kid will come across a person of interest and do everything possible to mimic that person.
this is how they end up in gangs! hopefully they meet and become infatuated with a good human being first!
I have read many of stories stating some poor kids, with the right person/teacher influenced them to become doctors or lawyers or even teachers!

yes, parenting begins at home BUT it only takes one person out of the VILLAGE to make a difference in a childs life. "
