The Carthage girls lacrosse team dominated the field as Skaneateles' hopes for a seventh- straight Section III, Class C title faded in an 18-8 loss in the finals at SUNY Cortland Tuesday.
The No. 1 Comets began their assault of the seventh-seeded Lakers early, scoring seven straight goals in the first half, allowing only one from the Lakers - the first one of the game. By halftime Carthage had pulled ahead 10-3.
“We just didn't get position,” said Lakers' coach Bridget Marquardt said. “(Carthage) worked really good at the draws, and we just couldn't get our hands on the ball.”
The Lakers managed to stage a short-lived rally in the second half, but the Comets had an answer to every goal they shot.
Kat Pille paced Skaneateles with three goals and two assists. Two of her goals and one of her assists came during a three-goal run during the second half when the Lakers seemed to come alive.
“After the half, we changed things up. We were able to adjust every once in a while, but they pressed us hard and we just couldn't seem to get the shots,” Marquardt said. “We'd finally get the opportunity and we'd throw it away, they're just a really tough team.”
Despite the fact that Skaneateles never held the lead after the initial goal, Marquardt said that they never gave up. It was just a matter of being out played.
Also leading Skaneateles were Lindsay Angelillo, who contributed two goals and two assists, Maddy Morrissey, posted two goals and Jackie Stuckle finished with one goal. With 18 goals allowed, Heather Mullen collected 17 saves for Skaneateles.
With both teams coming in as defending sectional champions, Carthage in Class B and Skaneateles in Class C, it was a guaranteed battle with neither team underestimating the other.
“Nobody's easy to beat, and Skaneateles is always a strong team,” Comets coach Sue Gallagher said. “It was really neat to go up against another defending champion. That doesn't always happen, and they gave us a good game.”
Leading for Carthage were Katie Ferris, with six goals and two assists, Kailah Kempney had four goals and Katherine DeRonda had three goals and six assists. Gabrielle Kamide had one goal and four assists and Amy Tiernan scored two goals.
“No one thought we'd get this far,” Marquardt said. “It is disappointing to have it end this way. There's no reason for us to hang our heads, the girls played their best. It was just a matter of getting the ball down the field, and we just couldn't get past them the way that we would've liked to.”
Skaneateles defeated Tully handily in the first round of the tournament, and then slid by Westhill and Marcellus, both by 11-10 last-second wins to advance to the title game.
Carthage moves on to the regional tournament against Cornell East Thursday.
