Few things in sports are consistent, but the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team winning in the postseason has been one of them - at least over the last six years. Despite some struggles during the regular season, the seventh-seeded Lakers have won back-to-back gritty Section III, Class C games to advance to the semifinals against No. 3 Marcellus at the West Genesee sports complex Saturday.
Skaneateles (11-9) had a couple of huge plays in the final minute of the quarterfinals game to defeat second-seeded Westhill, 11-10 Thursday. After Westhill tied the game with 4:12 left in the second half, Lakers freshman Carley Davis scored the winning goal with 49 seconds left on a Maddy Morrissey assist.
“(Westhill) took an eight-meter shot with 1.5 seconds left , but Heather Mullen made a great save to keep the win for us,” Skaneateles coach Bridget Marquardt said. “This was a pretty intense game.”
Lindsay Angelillo led the Lakers with three goals, while Kat Pille tallied two goals and an assist and Diane Vitkus scored twice. Morrissey had one goal and two assists and Davis sank one goal and an assist. Shelby McNeilly and Allison Steckel each scored once. Mullen recorded five saves.
“Westhill is a great team,” Marquardt said of the squad that beat the Lakers twice this season. “But just like every other year, where we are now is a lot better than where we started - its a lot more pressure and we haven't won anything yet.”
