JORDAN - For the first time since 2004, the Jordan-Elbridge girls lacrosse team hosted a Section III playoff game. And the wait paid off.

Jordan-Elbridge junior Emily Dillon scores on Chittenango defender Rachel Antelmi during the Eagles' 18-5 victory in a Section III, Class C game at home Wednesday evening. Dillon scored two goals in the game.
The sixth-seeded Eagles easily knocked off No. 11 Chittenango 18-5 in the Class C first-round game Wednesday.

Jordan-Elbridge plays at third-ranked Marcellus today in a quarterfinal game.

The Eagles are familiar with the Mustangs, having lost twice to them this season.

“This year we had good games and battles,” Eagles first-year coach Mark Fietta said. “We came up on the short end of those battles.”

Despite trailing 1-0 just two minutes into the game, Jordan-Elbridge sophomore Carrie-Jo Farrugia scored the first of her four goals. The Eagles went on to score six straight goals.

“That was a huge confidence boost,” Fietta said. “It got our nerves out.”

Farrugia also had an assist for the Eagles, while Amanda Wheeler had a hat trick. Kelsey Youmell, Emily Dillon, Chelsea Maitand, Kelsey Armani and Amanda Brown each scored twice, while Hanne Bailey scored once.

Youmell, Dillon, Bailey, Emily Bates and Brown also contributed assists.

Kelsey Richardson had eight saves for the Eagles, while Molly Hourigan had one.

“The last couple of games we've played well defensively,” Fietta said. “Kelsey's coming up big with the key saves lately. We've been playing well and riding her confidence.”

The Eagles think that playing in front of the home fans was a huge boost.

“It's very overwhelming,” Farrugia said. “It feels good to win at home with all of your friends and family supporting you. It feels good to bring it back and I'm proud of everyone.”

Though Marcellus has had Jordan-Elbridge's number this season, Fietta likes his squad's chances if they continue to pass the ball effectively. He also said the two prior losses won't have an impact on today's game.

“I'm just going to tell the girls to forget the other two games and play,” Fietta said. “It's tough to beat a team three times, but we just need to play our game, (play) hard and see what happens.”

With their defense and offense hitting their peak right now, it's a possibility that Jordan-Elbridge finds a way to get past Marcellus despite having only a few seniors.

The Eagles' experienced defense is also playing its best lacrosse of the season. Last week, they shut down Skaneateles in the second half of an 8-7 win and appears to be ready for a showdown with the Mustangs.

“Most of our seniors are on the defensive side,” Fietta said. “That's very important - you win or lose on (the) defensive side. If you play solid defense you will win championships.”
