AUBURN - The Auburn High School boys lacrosse team ended Central Square's hopes of a Section III, Class A playoff spot in a 12-5 win on Senior Night at Holland Stadium, Tuesday.

Auburn's Andrew Chadderdon gets sandwiched by Central Square defenders Brady Halihan, left, and Chris Netzband as Auburn beat Central Square 12-5 at Holland Stadium on Tuesday night.
Andrew Chadderdon led the Maroons offense with five goals.

“I think I played good,” he said. “My teammates attacked well and the defense did a great job. (Goalie) Adam Perri really stepped it up.”

The Maroons defense came through in the second half in which they allowed just one goal. Perri finished with nine saves, with strong defense by seniors Dom Sedlak and Brandon O'Connor.

“In the second-half we played well,” Maroons defensive coordinator JT Pitcher said. “We started well and finished off well.”

Chris Porten finished with four goals, while Chris Murdoch finished with two goal and three assists. Connor Entenmann led the offense in assists with five, while scoring a goal. Mike Miskell and Matt Festa each had an assist.

The shocker was that the Red Hawks didn't play zone defense, something the Maroons offense has had trouble with in the past.

“We need to get the zone offense working,” Chadderdon said. “We're a very dangerous man-to-man offense.”

The Maroons will address the zone offense before their final game of the season and sectionals.

“The zone is important for us to develop,” Maroons offensive coordinator John Montone said. “At times you see us improving, while at other times it seems we're not getting better, but we're not getting worse.”

The Maroons coaching staff will look at defenses that run zones and work with the offense.

“We do a lot of scouting and watching a lot of tape,” Montone said.

Another key thing the Maroons want to do is get their midfield involved and not just attack. With that it would take pressure off Entenmann and Chadderdon and allow them to mix it up and spread around the offense.

“If you have five or six threats it's harder to be stopped,” Montone said.

A factor in that is the Maroons' youth. Despite being a threat in Section III, Chadderdon and Entenmann are only juniors who learned from the seniors that were honored in their final regular-season home game.

“It's awesome to make this type of impact,” Chadderdon said. “The coaches are working Connor and I and we both try to make everyone around us better.”

While the offense looks to be clicking and the defense's second-half performance is a building block heading into sectionals, the Maroons still need to play a full 48 minutes.

“We need to just put complete games together,” Pitcher said. “We played a good second half. We would have like to have a tighter first half.”

Auburn outshot the Red Hawks 30-19, while having more groundballs 55-31 and winning faceoffs 14-7.

Auburn (11-5 overall, 7-4 league) travels to Liverpool Friday, with the possibility of still hosting a sectional game.

“We've just kept fighting for the last home playoff spot,” Chadderdon said. “I think we'll be just fine. We've been working hard and clicking lately. We can play with any team in the section.”
