At 19, singer Julia Nunes has amassed a loyal audience through YouTube videos depicting her self-harmonizing pop songs and playing along on a ukelele. This weekend, Nunes will perform in person at the Auburn Public Theater.
Nunes, of Fairport, began attracting attention on YouTube with her covers of songs by artists like The Beatles, Queen and Destiny's Child.
Through editing, she harmonizes with herself and accompanies on guitar or ukelele. Nunes' videos caught the attention of actress Molly Ringwald, who told “Good Morning America” that Nunes “completely inspired me” to take up the ukelele in 2008.
Since making her name on the Internet video site, Nunes has on four occasions opened for Ben Folds, whose song, “Gone,” was covered by Nunes.
She has also performed sold-out shows in London and won the 2007 Bushman World Ukelele Video Contest.
Nunes has also released two albums of original material, “Left Right Wrong” in 2007 and “I Wrote These” in 2008.
Her YouTube channel, the 24th-most subscribed channel among musicians on the site, has attracted more than 3 million hits.
