HIT: To the Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive conducted Saturday at mailboxes all over the country, including plenty in Cayuga County.
In the past 16 years, carriers represented by the National Association of Letter Carriers and rural letter carriers, other postal employees and volunteers have delivered nearly one billion pounds of donations to food pantries.
Thanks to all the participants in this year's drive, and to all the people who left something for their carrier to pick up.
MISS: To a diesel fuel leak on a tractor trailer last week that resulted in a three-mile stretch of Route 38 in Throop and Auburn becoming slick.
The leaked fuel was the cause of a minor accident in Auburn, police said. Fortunately, the amount of the leak was not enough to pose a serious threat to the environment.
HIT: To the local celebration of the NAACP's 100th anniversary, and the related events the Auburn/Cayuga chapter held.
It started with an impressive Freedom Fund banquet on Friday night, continued Saturday when the quarterly meeting of the state NAACP was held in Auburn and concluded Sunday when visiting members of the organization worshiped together at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
This was a great weekend for showcasing Auburn and its community spirit to more than 100 out-of-town guests.
HIT: To Jamie Lockhart, the winner of the first Cayuga County Mother of the Year contest, which was created by Elements Salon and Day Spa in Auburn.
The winning mom got a day at the spa on Saturday and a nice breakfast on Sunday. The owners of Elements provided a nice service with this contest, which helped to spotlight how much mothers mean to their families and the community.
