Large stone monuments recognizing America's war veterans are now in place at Auburn's Veterans Memorial Park, bringing the site much closer to completion after more than two years of work.
Stones weighing about 3,000 pounds each, adorned with brass plaques, were delivered and carefully put in place Saturday morning at the park along Genesee Street next to the Cayuga County office building.
“It was just a weed patch,” memorial park committee member Jim Ferris said about the site, “and now it's a beautiful park.”
Ferris said that more than $200,000 has been raised so far and that the committee, made up of Korean War veterans, still needs another $100,000 to complete concrete work, install more blocks and improve and expand the landscaping.
“It's very impressive,” Ferris said, “and it will be more so when we do some more landscaping.”
But the park is now complete enough that the committee has scheduled a public dedication for Flag Day, Sunday, June 14.
“We're making history over there,” Ferris said. “We're making a park that generations to come will enjoy.”

IN THE UNITED STATES MARINE COPRS AND 17 YEARS IN THE NEW YORK GUARD I THINK I DID MY SHARE. YOU ARE RIGHT IN ONE WAY I ADMIT THESE PEOPLE DID SERVE OUR COUNTRY NOT JUST THEIRS.

IN ANSWER TO JAMES 13021, THIS PLOT OF LAND WAS GIVEN TO THE CITY BY THE BISGROVE FAMILY AND IT WAS TO BE USED AS A "VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK", NO ONE HAS DONE ANYTHING WITH IT SINCE. WE HAVE BUILT A PARK THAT I AM SURE THE ORIGINAL OWNER WOULD BE VERY PROUD OF. THERE ARE MANY PARKS IN AUBURN FOR CHILDREN TO PLAY ON. THIS IS A UNIQUE PARK AND IS RIVALED IN A VERY FEW CITIES IN THE UNITED STATES. ENJOY IT DON'T KNOCK IT.

Are you kidding???
I played ball in the park for years as kid, with many others every year. Even went sledding!!! We had the field all set up baseball.
Now kids get run out there and scolded!!!
Now it's been turned into a place for the dead, where it only gets used a few times a year to remember those who died fighting for their country.
The park "was" a place for the living. And now it's a place for the Dead, even though no one is buried there.
Angy hurtful people took away a fun spot for kids to play ball and sled and turn it into a memorial for the Dead. Shame on you! "
