A 60-year-old Moravia man arrested this week on charges that he torched a pickup truck covered in spray-painted swastikas said mental stress associated with his service in Vietnam and in his personal life is to blame.
Cayuga County sheriff's deputies said Daniel L. Hobart, of 5504 Skinner Hill Road, Moravia, was arrested Monday and charged with third-degree felony arson for destroying the vehicle on Feb. 24.

Hobart said he passed the truck, which was parked on the corner of Doolittle and Moravia/Venice Townline roads in Moravia, every time he drove to his sister's house and that eventually he could not stand seeing the swastikas.

“To me (the swastikas) was the equivalent of burning the flag on the ground,” Hobart said.

“I just couldn't take seeing it any more,” Hobart said. “I dunno, I just did something I shouldn't have done.”

Hobart said he is in the process of acquiring medical documentation from his doctor in order to submit it to the Cayuga County District Attorney's Office to prove that he is suffering from mental health issues associated with the recent deaths of two of his children and with the injuries he suffered while serving in the Vietnam War.

Hobart said he would like to ask the DA's office to offer him a lesser charge.

Deputies said they do not believe Hobart played a role in the spray painting of the truck or local street signs that were also spray painted with swastikas or the letter “A” surrounded in a circle last winter. They are still investigating those cases.

Hobart, who is free on $5,000 cash bail, is scheduled to appear in the town of Moravia court on Thursday, May 14.

Currently, Hobart does not have an attorney.

Deputies ask that anyone who has information about the vandalism or the arson call detectives at 253-1610.

" This man has been through so much, and I think though it was illegal it was the right this for him to do. I lived down the road from that truck, and for the longest time nobody touched that truck and then one day it had been vandalized. Who ever did that should be the one paying for Mr. Hobart's legal fees. He has enough to worry about with his son passing away. Even If I hadn't grown up with his son, I would donate money for this man. "

" Okay, burning a truck that isn't yours is illegal, and probably shouldn't have been done, but what kind of whack job puts swastikas all over his truck? That seems far freakier (and more dangerous) to me than a veteran who removes an object adorned with symbols of hatred, racism, and intolerance. Good riddance! "

" I feel for him. He is a quiet man that keeps to himself, also his son passed away recently. "

" Shame on the community that allows a deplorable sight to remain visible to all. This man stands for justice and equality. We should all be so brave to nip intolerance in the bud whereever it may flourish.
I would unequivably donate to his defense fund. "

" I'm a 28 year old man who never got the opportunity to serve his country due to an injury. I'm impressed by this man's ability to keep it together during an otherwise difficult scene. So what, he burned it. Nobody was hurt, and an otherwise disgusting eyesore was replaced by an even better story. The story of succession. The story of how our races have evolved. How today, a black man is president. I may or may not share my opinions often, but as far as this man's actions go... He is guilty of one thing. BEING A TRUE AMERICAN! Freedom of speech should always be accepted, but to belittle a town and display such disgust. The family is lucky that it only came to a burned truck. The rage that this sort of behavior CAN provoke is just beyond words. Kudos Mr. Hobart.

If the Citizen could notify me of how to contribute to this man's legal fund, I will match "TTBG"'s donation. "

" I'm a free speech guy but. This man is a hero! Let the genius with the pickup truck covered in spray-painted swastikas pay his bail and apologize to every Vet in the USA... "

" I'm in my late 70's, a Korea/Vietnam vet and my Mom lived on Skinner Hill Road for years. I can understand why this man committed this act. I'd donate to his defense fund if I knew where to send a check. "
