Throughout history, women have assumed multiple roles in different societies. And the same has happened during times of war.

This weekend, students and visitors at Wells College will have a chance to see through the eyes of women what it is like to be both warrior and victim. “Valiant,” an original play examining the roles of women in war, will make a one-night stop Saturday at the Aurora college.
Along with the performance, playwright Lanna Joffrey will also present a workshop this weekend on how to adapt a play from an existing manuscript.
Wells College Assistant Theater Professor Siouxsie Grady saw Lanna Joffrey perform last year in a play called “9 Parts of Desire.” When Grady met Joffrey and discussed “Valiant,” she thought she wanted to try and bring it to Wells, Grady said.
“It is incredibly modern and poignant,” she said.
Based on the book “Valiant Women in War and Exile” by Sally Hayton-Keeva, the play uses interviews with women from Japan, Afghanistan, Northern Ireland, Russia and other countries to examine how major conflicts affect women, and how the women can affect conflict.
Featuring a three-woman cast, “Valiant” has received nominations for the New York Innovative Theatre Award for Outstanding Ensemble and the New York International Fringe Festival Overall Excellence in Performance Award.
The performance is part of the Wells' annual Arts & Lecture Series, which bring professional artists to the college to perform and discuss their work. Each year, featured artists are invited to represent the fields of dance, drama and music.
Grady said this will be an opportunity for the Wells community to experience both great writing and acting from Joffrey.
“She has an ability to be completely different people, and to have this incredible in-depth understanding of them,” Grady said. “I thought she would be an actor who would appeal directly to the community here at Wells.”
While the show time for “Valiant” is in the evening, those interested in the writing process can participate in an afternoon workshop with Joffrey. The workshop, which will cover the adaptation process, is open and free to the public. But Grady said space is limited, and attendees are asked to call ahead to reserve a spot.
For those who do show up, it will be an opportunity to learn how a manuscript, such as a book or other document, becomes a play.
“We always try and get guests who will do these hands-on workshops with our students,” Grady said.
