Vargason continues hot streak; Wild hits for cycle

Moravia's Michelle Vargason continued her hot hitting in a 9-1 win over Marathon Monday.
The junior has nine hits in her last 12 at-bats, collecting two triples and a home run in the last three games alone.

On the season, she is batting over .500 with an on-base percentage of more than .600.

Continuing her streak, Vargason went 2-for-3 at the plate Monday with a triple.

On the mound for the Blue Devils, Jessica Kehoe pitched a complete game, giving up nine hits and one run.

“She had a good defense behind her,” Ed Dow said.

Kehoe also went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and one run.

Moravia (4-8) hosts Union Springs Wednesday.

Union Springs 3, Newfield 0

Marissa Valentino pitched a three-hit shutout, tallying 10 strikeouts while also scoring a run for the Wolves.

Union Springs' Melana Ott contributed two hits and one run while Rachel Johnston added two hits and two RBIs.

The Wolves (6-4) play at Moravia Wednesday.

Westhill 8, Jordan-Elbridge 1

Jenn Gasparek gave up 11 hits, eight runs, two earned, and struck out two for the Eagles.

Liz Caspari finished with one hit and one stolen base, Trista Williams earned the other hit and Sarah Fordyce finished with one RBI.

Groton 6, Southern Cayuga 3

Pacing the Chiefs were Lianna May with a home run and Jessica Currie with a triple.

Southern Cayuga hosts Waverly today.

BASEBALL

Auburn 27, Corcoran 3

Matt Wild hit for the cycle, going 5-for-6 with seven RBIs, two doubles, one triple, one home run, a single and three runs to lead the Maroons.

Auburn's Ed Charles went 4-for-6 with two RBIs, Bobby Gage was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Tim Smith went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Tim Locastro was 4-for-6 with four runs and four RBIs.

Chris Anderson threw six innings for the Maroons, recording eight strikeouts and allowing four hits.

“Anderson had an overwhelming pitching performance today,” Auburn coach T.J. Gamba said. “We just had a great all-around game, hot with the bats and on the mound.”

The Maroons host Utica Proctor today.

Moravia 13, Marathon 0

Greg Pasho pitched a complete game shutout to put him at 3-1 for the season. Pasho also struck out two while allowing eight hits and no walks.

The Blue Devils tallied 16 hits with Nick Dwyer going 3-for-4 with one RBI, Jordan Mahunik was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a double, T.J. Powers went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one double, Pasho was 2-for-5 with one RBI and one double, and Dylan Powers added two hits.

Moravia (4-4) faces Union Springs in the first game of the Cayuga County Tournament Wednesday.

Newfield 11, Union Springs 9

The Wolves surrendered two unearned runs in the seventh to take the loss.

Justin Lyndaker struck out seven in five innings of work, while Union Springs reliever Jared Bretherton took the loss, but struck out five in two innings.

Offensively, the Wolves were led by Eric Guyle (two hits, double, three RBIs), Lyndaker (triple) and Andy Riester (two runs, one hit, one RBI).

Union Springs (4-6 overall, 4-1 IAC) plays Moravia Wednesday at Falcon Park in the Cayuga County Tournament.

Onondaga 12, Port Byron 8

Port Byron was paced by Jake Bennett (triple, three RBIs), Caleb Green (triple, two RBIs) and Brandon Dixon (double, RBI).

Brandon Anderson struck out nine for the Panthers, while Matt Janusz had six punch-outs.

The Panthers (1-6) host Red Creek today.

BOYS GOLF

Port Byron 232, Fabius-Pompey 239

Andy Leary and Josh Malenick both led the undefeated Panthers with 44s while Coty Abraham shot a 46.

J.T. Debois shot a 48, Dan O'Hara recorded a 50 and Adam Malenick finished with a 52.

Port Byron (4-0) hosts Manlius Pebble Hill today.

Weedsport 235, Manlius Pebble Hill 245

Jake DeChick and Jason Ryan were the co-medalists, both tallying a 40 for the Warriors while Andrew Lane finished with a 45.

Weedsport (3-1) hosts Bishop Ludden and Jordan-Elbridge Wednesday.

Lansing 200, Union Springs 222

Pacing the Wolves were Michael Bean with a 42, Austin Thomas had a 43, Eric Hlywa and Tim Morabito both carded a 45 and B.J. O'Hara finished with a 47.

Union Springs (4-3) plays Thomas A. Edison at Mark Twain Golf Course today.

Bishop Grimes 232, Cato-Meridian 259

The Blue Devils' Paul Barbagallo carded a 45 and Todd Wilcox shot a 47.

Austin Ashby earned four first-place finishes as the Warriors won the dual meet, n the triple jump (37-2.5), the high jump (5-0) and as a leg in both the 4x800m relay (9:42) and the 4x400m relay (4:11). Members of the 4x800m relay also included Justin Spencer, Tyler Albrecht and Logan Thompson while Tyler Brown, Craig Mietz and Bob Vivenzio were the other members of the 4x400m relay team.

Mietz collected two individual wins, in the 400m (57.9) and the long jump (15-7), while Spencer added a win in the 800m (2:21).

Also winning for Weedsport were Abe Jordan n the 110m hurdles (17.4) and the 400m hurdles (64.0), Mike Greer won both the 1600m (5:08) and the 3200m (10:58), Collin Dillabough finished first in the shot put (40-2) and the discus (107-7), and Dominic Galletta in the pole vault (10-0).

The Warriors (6-0) host Port Byron Wednesday.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Weedsport 120, Manlius Pebble Hill 12

Weedsport 103, Faith Heritage 34

With four first-place finishes, Alyssa Field helped the Warriors remain undefeated. She won the 100m hurdles (17.5), the 400m hurdles (82.1), the long jump (13-8) and was a leg in the winning 4x100m relay (55.7) with Christi Quinn, Kaitlin Hammersley and Lovetta Smith.

Smith also won the 100m (13.8) and the 200m (28.9) while Quinn was a member of the winning 4x400m relay (4:54) with Michele Donahue, Gabby LaForce and Erin Daly.

Weedsport's 4x800m relay team also finished first (12:07) with performances from Caitlin Jones, LeAnn Spingler, Alyssa O'Bryan and Amy Sanchez.

LaForce won the 1500m (6:01), O'Bryan took first in the 3000m (13:43), Allison Roosa won the shot put (29-0), Hammersley took first in both the discus (87-8) and the pole vault (8-0), and Donahue won the high jump (4-10).

Weedsport (6-0) hosts Port Byron Wednesday.

Union Springs 93, Groton 39

Union Springs 94, Marathon 35

J.P. Garropy set a school record, for the third meet in a row, in the long jump (20-1).

Union Springs won the 4x800m relay (10:40.1) with John Carroll, Jared Smith, Jake Spina and Tyler Cochran.

The Wolves also finished first in the 4x100m relay (46.1) with Vinnie Salato, Brandon Winter, Nate Markham and Scott Wood.

The 4x400m (3:45.7) relay team took first against Marathon with Winter, Zach Casper, Josh Terry and Wood.

Winter also won the 400m (53.9), Salato won the 100m (11.4) and the 200m (23.9), Wood took first in the 110m hurdles (16.5) and the 400m hurdles against Marathon (103.3) and Casper won the 1600m (5:12.1) over Groton.

Joe Feocco won the 800m (2:19.4) and the triple jump (38-2.5), while Matt Heindl took the shot put (38-7.5) and the discus (101-7).

Union Springs 71, Groton 34

Marathon 68, Union Springs 53

Danielle Lyndaker won the 100m hurdles (19.2) and took first n the 400m hurdles (1:22.0), Kali Stolz won the 100m (14.0), and Michelle Wilmot won the triple jump (28-7) in the 800m (2:44.4).

The 4x100m relay team of Casey Emmett, Kim Selmyre, Amanda Shepard and Alison Guyle placed first (1:02.1) while the 4x400m relay team topped also won (4:55.2) with Lyndaker, Emmett, Alexa Schooley and Wilmot.
