Two runaway teenagers accused of breaking into a Port Byron apartment in order to steal money for groceries were arrested by the Port Byron Police Department Monday, police said.
Jesse M. Nelson, 17, of 8367 South St., Port Byron, and a 15-year-old boy were arrested and charged with third-degree felony burglary after police found them hiding in an abandoned home, police said.
Both teens are accused of stealing $400 over the weekend from a Main Street apartment while the tenant was out of town, police said. Nearly $375 was recovered while the rest was spent on food and other living supplies.
An anonymous tip led authorities to the teenagers' hideout, police said.
Nelson was arraigned in the Port Byron Village Court and was remanded to the Cayuga County Jail in lieu of bail, which was set at $1,000 cash or $2,000 bond. The 15-year-old was issued an appearance ticket and released to his parents.
Neither teen was reported missing by their parents, police said.
