SKANEATELES - With the Skaneateles bats taking time to warm up, pitcher Zach Augustine took it upon himself to take control.
The junior tossed a complete game two-hitter, limiting the Union Springs baseball team to one unearned run in a 4-1 victory Monday in the Lakers' home opener. With a win over Waterloo Saturday, Skaneateles is 2-0 to open the season.

“Any time you can get a win it feels good,” Skaneateles coach Tom Warner said. “It wasn't a pretty win (Monday), but it was still a win and it is a nice start to the season.”

Owen Stokes-Cawley provided an RBI triple in the third inning, but Skaneateles struggled to add to that total for the next couple innings. In the meantime, Augustine was dominant on the mound, completely shutting down the Wolves.

“I was really happy with the way Zach pitched,” Warner said. “I told him to go out there and throw strikes and get ahead of the batters and that is just what he did.”

In the fifth inning, Jared Amory delivered the big hit Skaneateles needed - a two-run single.

Augustine and Nick Pesarchick also came up with key doubles for the Lakers.

“We were able to pull it out when we needed it,” Warner said. “We struggled at the plate a little bit today, but we were able to get the hits when we needed to and we pulled it out.”

For Union Springs, losing pitcher Justin Lyndaker allowed seven hits and three earned runs in six innings. Andy Riester had an RBI single.

Skaneateles travels to Homer today for a two-day tournament. The Lakers will face Tully today, with another game to follow Wednesday.

Warner said it's going to be a week where his team gets to play a lot of baseball and the players will learn a lot about themselves. It may be early in the season, but this will be an important week, especially for the Lakers' confidence.

“We have more experience this year,” Warner said. “I know the seniors want to make it to the postseason this year and go deep into the postseason. I think we can do it this year if we play like I know we can.”
