An elderly Moravia woman was cheated out of money by scammers claiming to offer driveway repair work, according to the state police.
Police said that on March 31, the Moravia Police Department investigated an incident in which a woman was approached at her home by two men and was talked into having her driveway sealed. She was then told that they would only accept cash and told her that she needed to go to her bank and cash a personal check.
Police said the woman felt pressured to comply and met the men outside her bank and gave them money.
According to a news release from Herkimer-based state police, the incident was very similar to a March 3 case in which an elderly woman in the town of Herkimer was charged thousands of dollars by two men who patched three small holes in her driveway.
The victim in the Herkimer case was also pressured to withdraw money from her bank and turn it over to the con men.
Police say the two incidents serve as a reminder to the public not to be victimized by this type of scam. This type of scam is often conducted by traveling groups from outside the local area. Should someone come to your home offering to repair your driveway and pressuring you to make payment for work you have not authorized, contact the police immediately and report the suspicious activity.
