ALBANY -- An attempt by Republicans in the New York Senate to block a tax hike on top earners has failed, along with an amendment that would have continued the STAR property tax rebate program for homeowners.
Senators are continuing to vote Friday on a series of bills to enact a $131.8 billion budget for the fiscal year that began Wednesday.
The budget was negotiated by Gov. David Paterson and Democratic leaders in the Senate and Assembly majorities. It uses federal stimulus money, tax hikes and some program cuts to close a deficit projected at $17.7 billion.
The Assembly already passed all nine budget measures and the Senate has acted on those covering transportation, the environment, health, education and public protection.
