Brad Molloy: Why import Palin for an Auburn celebration?

“Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home.”
- John Howard Payne

Friends, it's been another great week in the life of yours truly.

And why do I feel so blessed? Because I haven't had to pay for coffee for the past few days after I found 20 bucks lying on the sidewalk.

Naturally, I would have looked for the owner, but let's be frank here, if I walked into the grocery store and asked if anyone had dropped a 20 I'd see hands shooting in the air so fast it would look like people were doing the wave at a sporting event.

So, no, I pocketed the cash and enjoyed a few beverages. You see, sometimes, life can hand you lemons - in which case you're suppose to make lemonade.

But other times you'll get lucky and life will toss you a couple of bucks.

Perhaps fate wanted me to buy the lemonade other people were selling, but I really needed a caffeine fix, so I went with coffee instead.

It was while I was sitting in the coffee shop that I read a news article that really took me by surprise.

Apparently, Sarah Palin might be paying Auburn a little visit to help celebrate Founders Day.

I was on the edge of my seat as I read the entire piece. In fact, I don't think I've been this excited to see a fake celebrity since my dad took us boys to watch professional wrestling at the high school years ago.

And now that I think about it I'll bet she'd look better in Spandex than any of those guys ever could.

And why is she coming here?

Well, not only is it going to be Founders Day but it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the state of Alaska.

Which reminds me, you know who else turns 50 this year? Barbie!

Now I'm not saying that Sarah Palin and Barbie have much in common, after all one has been all over the world and held a number of different careers and the other?

Well, besides being a doll she is also the governor of Alaska.

This is the lady who had to be told that Africa is not a country. And when asked to name an actual country in North America, she couldn't come up with anything even though she lives in one of them!

If we're going to have a Founders Day then let's tap some notable people that are actually from Auburn to celebrate.

How about Willard Bundy? He's the guy who invented the time clock. Before him the only thing people had to punch out before going home from work was each other.

So is Palin a good choice for the celebration?

Who knows. My point is that maybe the best way to promote hometown pride is not to import it.

" Of course, I abhor Sarah Palin and everything she stands for as a Politician AND a person. But all that said, she will bring in people and the bucks....but here is the "rub"...she will drive just as many away. I find it hard to believe that we could not have found a "celeb" either from this area or someone who has moved to metropolitan centers to pursue an already successful career. Auburn has produced a multitude of great actors, writers, directors AND politicians. It is founders day and the only connection that I can see with Sarah Palin is the fact that she is the Governor of a State that William Seward initiated the purhase, thereof. Little or no relation to founders day. Seward is only one of our most famous citizens.
What about Mr. Bisgrove who is funding the redevelopment of much of Downtown? And the Walsh family that produced so much talent? "

" Why not have Palin? That chick could bring in alot of people, and they spend money. Plus, she is a heck of alot better looking than Hillary. I mean, what do you think when Hil meets dignitaries from other countries---they are fixated on how unattractive she is rather than the matters at hand. "

" I didn't vote for Gov. Palin and disagree with most of her political views...However, I'm excited about the possibility that she may shine the national spotlight on Auburn for a day and in the process lure thousands to our downtown. Our local economy will get a quick little shot in the arm and Auburn can take pride in being the center of attention for at least a day. Nothing but good can come of this. "

" Nicely said, "telldastory", though it won't make an impact on such a die hard partisan as this column proves Mr. Malloy to be. Sad, isn't it, that this is supposed to be an example of the thinking and opinions of the local citizenry? "

" Mr. Malloy

I agree with telldastory. Your column is a complete waste. Too bad your Dad didn't teach you something not to use sexist remarks instead of taking you to the professional wrestling match. On second thought, too bad you didn't get in the ring.

Where are all the comments from "NOW" representatives. Oh yea, I forgot the subject of the sexist remarks would have to be a liberal. "

" Hell, I live in Central Texas, I'll be available to fill in at the last moment, after all, I was in the celebration (parade) 50 years ago, so why not??? "

Mr. Malloy I continue to be amazed that this newspaper gives you space to spout your nonsensical blathering. First and foremost no matter how a person may feel about Ms. Palin's politics I think few would call her a 'fake' celebrity. She was after all a candidate for the second highest office in our land. She is also the governor of the state of Alaska. Do you see a connection here? William Seward, Alaska Purchase- Palin, Alaska's Governor? I personally think it was an inspired gesture to invite her. As always in Auburn anything that might be a good thing is put down. This mentality equates to those who are resistant to new ideas, you know the why change we've ALWAYS done it this way theory.

Auburn & Cayuga County have a rich history, one that is too often ignored by our leadership. We have a diamond in the rough here and with a bit of investment and polish we could only benefit from the national attention Ms. Palin would bring with her. I am sure that there will also be plenty of attention given to local notables and their ancestors and it all will mesh together very nicely. "
