SYRACUSE -- Federal authorities in New York have detained a man accused of taking money from a critically ill Canadian for an organ transplant in the Philippines that was never done.
Jerome Feldman was arraigned in Syracuse on federal wire fraud charges. The 67-year-old suspect pleaded not guilty and waived a detention hearing Thursday. His court-appointed federal defender says he's reviewing the charges against Feldman.
Feldman was arrested in February in the Philippines and ordered back to New York. He is accused of having a Canadian couple wire $70,000 to a DeWitt bank in return for a liver transplant for the husband. The transplant was never scheduled and the 54-year-old patient died waiting at a hospital in the Philippines.
