Thank goodness for Stevie Rusin.
Jon Swanson and I teamed up with Stevie in the 700 Club Trios event Sunday at Cedar House Lanes. This is a tournament where it usually takes a strong effort from each team member, since the competition is keen and scores tend to soar.
As it turns out, Stevie was pretty much a one-man show. The right-hander, with his technique of lofting the ball well over the foul line, rolled a 672 series, capped off with a 269 game, and led us to a second-place finish in Division 2 (637 team average and below).
Our total was 1,779 and we shared $120. For the record, I had 559 while Swanson contributed 548. Still, we never gave up, which was important. As a team, we came in just one pin ahead of third-place finishers Steve Walawender (619), David Dec (608) and Gary Fedigan (551), who won $60 for their 1,778.
Champions of the division were Mark Hlywa (660), Rick McDonald (639) and Dale Clark (589). They had 1,888 and took home $180.
In Division 1 (638 and over), Jeff Matty fired a 705 series, including a 279 game, as his team shot 2,049 to capture the title. Also chipping in were Mike Sheehan (683) and Rick Lambrecht (661). The trio won $180 for its efforts.
Matty was pleased because his team outscored the formidable threesome of Mike Ryan (710), Steve Suslik (648) and Benny Appleby (644). That team, bowling on Matty’s set, placed third with 2,002 and won $60.
“You always think you’re going to have a tough time beating those guys,” Matty said. “They are three of the best bowlers in the city. But we’re all friends, and they help us relax.”
Chris Gomez had 780 to post the day’s high score, which included a 277 game. Todd Wilcox (650) and Gary Feldman Jr. (585) helped Gomez’s team place second in the division with 2,005 and win $120.
Rounding out the top individual shooters were Greg Walczyk, who had a 714, including a 279 game, Paul Samasuck (687) and Greg Bibbens, who rolled 655 with a 284 game.
Seventeen teams competed, and Cedar House provided pizza and wings after the event.
Moving on to other tournament results, 37 area women seniors bowled in a handicap singles event two weeks ago at Rainbow Lanes. Five age categories were featured.
Alma Lees rolled a 680 to capture the 75-and-over division, which had 14 bowlers. Other winners were Pauline Shaw (70-74, 657), Peg Gilmore (65-69, 657), Betsy Richards (60-64, 643) and Margie Lowe (55-59, 584).
The prize fund for the event was $392. The five winners have the option of bowling in the New York State Senior Singles tournament later this year in New York City. Joan Ashby will arrange a trip for those wishing to go. Also, the Auburn Women’s Association will pay the bowlers’ entry fees.
