Bloodapalooza, a music event sponsored by the Cayuga County Chapter of the American Red Cross, attracts teens through music to the services and volunteer opportunities of the Red Cross. Bands participating this year include: Unfinished Business, Flood, White Picket Fence, Strong Willed and headliner The Scarlet Ending.
“I'm sure everyone will have fun, and I'm sure there won't be a problem,” Falcons owner Gary Feldman said, noting that no alcohol will be served.
The Scarlet Ending, a six-piece band, stretches the genre loosely defined as indie rock. It offers a blend of pop with cabaret and rock, all in three-part harmony. Sisters Kaleena and Kayleigh Goldsworthy command the stage, playing piano and guitar respectively, in addition to violin, melodica and other instruments. Providing the musical backbone of support are guitarist Jon Tedd, cellist Jess Hafner, bassist Aaron Garritillo and drummer Kyle Corcoran.
The Scarlet Ending has received recognition both at home and abroad, beginning with its debut, self-titled EP, which earned it a Syracuse Area Music Award (SAMMY) for Best Pop Record in 2005. Its full-length, “Cries and Whispers,” saw the release of “The Way We Used To Be,” which was featured on MTV's “The Hills.”
White Picket Fence, also indie rock, took root when Kelly Clancy (guitar), first laid hands on her guitar in sixth grade. She crossed paths with Elise Miklich (vocals), and the pair discovered their mutual passion for music. They began writing songs together to share only with close friends.
In December 2007, Clancy and Miklich officially called themselves White Picket Fence. Although many listened to their first demo in February 2008, recorded at The Square Studio, the duo believed something was missing. Percussionist Garret Koloski and guitarist Logan Messina joined forces to enhance the group's sound.
The full band has played several shows, including a weekly spot in the Syracuse lounge Mezzanotte's lineup. White Picket Fence was able to establish itself as a legitimate part of the Syracuse music scene. With a fuller sound, it went on to record its second CD at The Square Studio and added bassist Ryan Chapman to complete the sound.
Also performing at Bloodapalooza are Syracuse band Unfinished Business and Strong Willed, a straight edge heavy metal quintet consisting of high school and college students from Auburn.
Flood is also a heavy metal band from Syracuse, with vocalist Alan French, formerly of Auburn metal outfit If Hope Dies.
“Lyrically I've been inspired by bands like Earth Crisis and Undying,” French said by e-mail. “They have a very strong message associated with their music and drive me to try and say more than most bands are saying nowadays.”
