Local residents will have the first chance Saturday afternoon to say goodbye to a Cayuga County soldier who was killed in action last week while serving in Afghanistan.
The body of U.S. Army Pfc. Patrick A. Devoe II is scheduled to arrive at 1 p.m. at the Executive Air Hanger at Hancock International Airport in Syracuse. After a restricted plane-side service, a procession will travel along the Thruway, through Weedsport and Port Byron, and then through Auburn before arriving at Farrell's Funeral Service.
The route will pass in front of Port Byron High School, where local emergency personnel will render honors. Devoe, who was a 2000 graduate of Port Byron High School, was the second graduate of the school in six months to be killed overseas during military service.
The procession will also pass in front of Auburn Memorial City Hall on South Street, where it will pause while the bell “Old Wheeler” will ring in respect.
Members of the public are being asked to pay respects to Devoe along the procession route. However, it is requested that community members do not crowd the area around the funeral home.
The motorcade will have a police escort the entire way, and the New York State Police, Cayuga County Sheriff's Office and Auburn Police Department will all participate.
Following Monday's public service at St. Mary's Church, the funeral procession will pass by city hall again at approximately 11:30 a.m. before proceeding to a private burial at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Owasco.
There will also be a reception following Monday's service at Bistro One in Auburn hosted by the American Legion Post 7176, Vietnam Veterans Chapter 704 and the Monsignor Gabbani Memorial Club.
Donations for Devoe's family can be made to the Cayuga County Veterans Memorial Committee, 3131 Franklin Street Road, Auburn NY, 13021 or at the reception.
Devoe was killed after an improvised explosive device hit the vehicle he was driving on mounted patrol in Kandau Kalay, Afghanistan.
An Auburn native, Devoe joined the Army in January 2008.
