SKANEATELES #- When most people hear the words “Ace Hardware,” images of pipe wrenches, power drills and other construction supplies come to mind.

But Skaneateles Town Square, an Ace Hardware store located at 61 Fennell St., is quite a different establishment.
The store, which had a soft opening Nov. 26, is a combination hardware store and home decorating center, almost like an amalgamation of Lowe's and Bed, Bath & Beyond.
On Friday, Skaneateles Town Square presented a Ladies Night Open House complete with wine, hors d'oeuvres and tours of the luxurious facilities.
The affair, which was mostly organized by the store's merchandising and home decor manager Emily Custer, was attended by dozens of area residents, most of whom seemed quite surprised by the merchandise the store has to offer.
“This store is definitely unique, and it might just be the first of its kind,” Robert Amodie, Skaneateles Town Square general manager, said.
The facility, which is owned by three area families Amodie preferred not to name, was designed to appeal to the relatively upper-class residents in the Skaneateles area, he continued.
“And out of about 4,600 Ace Hardware stores, the company is looking at our store as a prototype for other similar marketplaces,” he added.
Visitors - both female and male - browsed through the two-story facility while store staffers offered a few refreshments and snacks.
On the first floor, with sections of paint supplies, furnishings and a greenhouse, Sennett resident Daniella Cole enjoyed a complimentary glass of wine.
“I really didn't come here looking to buy anything in particular, but all the stuff they have (for sale) here is really interesting,” she said. “I'm sure I'll be back soon.”
The second floor features more decorative items like cookware and china, artwork and other home decor.
Amodie said Skaneateles Town Square is planning a grand opening May 2 through May 9, and store hours will probably increase around that time.
“(The grand opening) will be an exciting week, with events for kids, full TV coverage, the works,” he explained. “It'll definitely be a big event.”
