An ex-con was charged with attempted murder Friday after police say he took a shot at a neighbor he doesn't get along with.
The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office said that Steven J. Seamans, 48, of 1372 Lick St., Moravia, shot at Gary L. Kirvan, 48, of 1410 Lick St., after Kirvan had followed him to a residence at the corner of Route 90 and Lick Street in the town of Summer Hill.
Kirvan was not hit, but police said the bullet struck Kirvan's car door just below the driver's side window.
Police said that Seamans and Kirvan are acquaintances and that there is a history of animosity between them.
Police said that after interviewing Kirvan, detectives arrested Seamans at his home and recovered the .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle that Seamans had taken the shot with.
Police charged Seamans with second-degree attempted murder. He was arraigned in Town of Summer Hill Court and remanded to the Cayuga County Jail without bail.
Seamans was sentenced in October 2003 to 1 1/3 to four years in prison for convictions of second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and driving while intoxicated.
Seamans was charged in April 2003 of leading police on a high-speed chase while he was drunk. He was charged with assaulting a fellow county jail inmate in August 2003.
According to state Department of Corrections records, he was released from Elmira Correctional Facility in April 2007.
