Our View: Hits & Misses

HIT: To the heartwarming story of a Moravia couple who took marriage to a new level when the wife donated her kidney to the husband.
It was an amazing story of good fortune that Denny and Sara Samara found each other, not just because they fell in love and got married (on July 7, 2007, or “7-7-7”), but also because Sara turned out to be one of the few people who could donate a kidney to Denny, who had to have one of his own kidneys removed in 1998 due to cancer. Last fall, Denny's health had worsened, and he badly needed a new kidney. That's when the couple discovered Sara was a match, and so far the operation has been a success.

MISS: To the death of John P. Tracy, a recent Auburn High School graduate, who was killed in a snowmobiling accident over the weekend in Lewis County.

It's clear from the messages posted on Internet news stories and guestbooks that this young man touched many people with his enthusiasm for life. There's no making sense of why these things happen, so the best a community can do is honor the person's memory and support the family and friends most affected by the tragedy.

A scholarship fund has been established: Memorials may be made to the John P. Tracy, Jr. Scholarship, c/o Auburn High School Guidance Office, 250 Lake Ave., Auburn, NY, 13021.

MISS: To an apparent theft at the Wegmans supermarket last Tuesday afternoon.

Police said a woman left her purse on the bench for a matter of seconds before she realized she had forgotten to take it with her when her ride arrived. But when she returned to the bench, it was gone, and police believe it was stolen. It's too bad the person who apparently found the purse didn't do the right thing and turn it in to the store or to police.
