Second-seeded Skaneateles (16-8-1) will face off with top-seeded New Hartford (22-2) Wednesday. The Spartans are coming off an 8-2 win Cortland-Homer.
Down 2-0 with just over 10 minutes left in regulation, the junior Cooney led the defending Section III champions with his first goal off assists from Seth Weiss and Lex Johnson.
Three power plays later and an injury to Patrick Emmer, who would later return, Cooney found the puck right back in his reach. He would strike again with his second goal in regulation and a key one in the game as it tied the game up and brought momentum to the Lakers side.
Trevor Diamond would deliver the Black Knights go-ahead goal with 0:14 left and bring it in for one of his 33 saves to send the game into overtime.
“Rome came to play old school hockey,” Lakers coach Mitch Major said.
Skaneateles was able to sneak out with the momentum after Cooney's second goal despite a sloppy first two periods. The Lakers' defense held Rome Free Academy to just 35 shots compared to their 46. The third quarter was when the Lakers' offense took over as they out-shot the Black Knights 14-5.
The Lakers came out threatening early in the first period as they took six shots on goal in one series. Knights' goalie Michael Endres held on to each one to keep the shutout alive until Matthew DeMatteo scores the first goal for the Black Knights with just five minutes left in the first period.
He was assisted by Nic Tardugno.
