The Moravia boys basketball team kept its IAC title hopes alive with a 55-42 victory over Waverly in the Section IV, IAC semifinals Wednesday.
Pat Mott earned 21 points, six rebounds and five assists to lead the Blue Devils, while Jeremy Stewart tallied 16 points and eight rebounds, Greg Pasho contributed eight points and Lee Wakefield added eight rebounds.
“They played extremely hard,” Moravia coach Todd Mulvaney said. “We worked very well defensively and much better offensively as well, sharing the ball and moving the ball well. We took advantage of their weaknesses. The kids are really playing well together.”
Mulvaney is hoping the Blue Devils (15-4) can keep up the success as they move on to the championship game against Watkins Glen at Tompkins County Community College Saturday.
“We are extremely excited to be in this position,” Mulvaney said. “Now we are preparing for Watkins Glen, they are a very good team and it will be a good battle. We will have to be ready for their defensive pressure, it will be an interesting match-up.”
VOLLEYBALL
Skaneateles 3, Solvay 0
The Lakers took the Section III, Class B semifinals game 25-12, 25-15, 25-6 to move on to the championship game.
Skaneateles will travel to Jamesville-Dewitt to face Cazenovia in the finals Saturday, a team they topped twice this season but will not take lightly.
“We match up well,” Lakers coach Doreen Doctor said. “It should be a good match, we beat them twice but they were both hard-fought, tough matches. Unfortunately volleyball is a game of mistakes and the team with fewer mistakes will come out on top.”
Doctor said that they knew what to expect from Solvay coming into the semifinals match since they faced them and defeated them twice before, they also had the upper hand when it came to force.
“It went well because the front line played very well,” Doctor said. “We have a lot of power on our front line and that controlled the match.”
Leading the Lakers were Chloe Warner who posted 24 assists, Emily Wood tallied nine kills, Ryan Merle contributed six kills and three blocks, Katherine Hill added eight kills, Alexa Campanile collected five kills and Destin VanTyle finished with four kills.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Holland Patent 41, Skaneateles 22
Freshman Emily Call paced the Lakers collecting eight points, while fellow freshman Jackie Leslie recorded seven points and eight rebounds and sophomore Ashley Sheldon finished with five rebounds and four steals.
Skaneateles ended its season 1-20.
