Local wrestlers will send an abundance of talent to the Section III Championships at the Utica Memorial Auditorium this weekend. Fifteen grapplers will take the mats for Division II on Saturday, while four Auburn wrestlers will compete in Division I on Sunday. Championship bouts will begin at about 7 p.m. each day, while the action kicks off at 10 a.m.

Cato-Meridian varsity wrestlers, front row, from left: Allen Holdridge, Dom Giacolone, Nick Lalone and back row, from left: Joe Giuffrida, Ethan Holt and Austin Lee will be competing in the Section III, Division II tournament on Saturday.
Not surprisingly, Cato-Meridian will send the most athletes to the mats, with six.

Port Byron and the Maroons are right behind the Patriot League champs, with four representatives apiece, Jordan-Elbridge will send three and Skaneateles will send two. Highlighting the local action will be the Blue Devils, who emerged with two sectional champs last season, and one alternate that also went to the NYSPHSAA meet. With a 35-2 record on the season, sophomore Nick Lalone is the only local No. 1 seed, in the 152-pound weight class, and will set out to earn the title again. Also in his weight class is Skaneateles' Kyle Sears, after a 22-13 mark this year.

Also intending to defend his title is 112-pound Cato-Meridian wrestler Dom Giacolone. After a 34-3 season - the junior's fourth 30-plus win season of his career - the lightweight earned a three seed, just ahead of Port Byron's Caleb Green (32-4) and Jordan-Elbridge alternate Mike Nguyen at 29-5.

Austin Lee wrestled well at the state meet after finishing third in the 285-pound weight class last season for Cato-Meridian.

This year, he nabbed a No. 3 seed after a 21-3 effort, just ahead of the Eagles' Brian Murray at 12-3.

Also competing in the heavyweights will be the Panthers' Justin Quimby at 215, after a 14-22 season. Cato-Meridian's Joe Giuffrida will represent the 171 group after going 30-9 on the year.

Middleweight Ethan Holt will also represent the Blue Devils in the 160 class, after notching a 32-5 record, earning a two seed. For the Lakers, Nathan Hunt (18-4) will wrestle in the 145-pound weight class, while Port Byron's Christian Cobb (21-9) will represent the 135 group. At 130 pounds, the Blue Devils' Allen Holdridge will compete after a 21-5 year, and at 119, Jordan-Elbridge's Preston Bishop (27-4) and the Panthers' Mitch Janes (32-8) earned alternate spots.

Competing in a tough Division I, Auburn's Luke Netti (119) amassed a 21-9 record, Neil Halpin (140) tallied a 16-13 record, Mike Henn (152) went 15-11 and Justin Gilmore (160) went 11-13.

Over the last two seasons, Fulton has dominated Division I, while Phoenix is the reigning two-time Division II champs.
