Thefts should be prosecuted to protect city's integrity

Thursday, February 19, 2009 12:05 AM EST

It was reassuring to hear that the mayor and the city council voted to have an outside agency investigate the thefts that occurred at the DPW. However, it was also disheartening to hear the statements made by Councilwoman Brower. Mrs. Brower needs a reality check, because I can assure her and any member of council, the public is fighting mad over these thefts.
We currently have a professional police department and a new DA administration, I would hate to see the cloud of suspicion draw them into an existing or non-existing cover up.

Mayor Quill and Councilor Brower were both elected for change. Considering the comments made by Councilor Brower, what exactly has changed? Has public trust increased? I happen to know the majority of city employees are in fact valuable, experienced, and honest employees, who care a great deal about their jobs and the city of Auburn. It's only a few individuals who are giving all valued employees a black eye. These crimes should have been prosecuted immediately to protect the integrity of all city employees. This should have been priority one for the city manager and the city council. Councilors Graney and Smith should be commended for their commitment to the taxpayers of Auburn.

" We had a man one time that kept taking horse droppings home to fertilize his new lawn. He passed the MP station every night with the droppings inside of a wheelbarrow to kept the bed of the truck clean and so he could dump the findings easily. This went on for ten days until his foreman and the MP's arrested him at he gate as he tried to pass thru that tenth night. It was not the taking of government 'leftovers' (horse droppings) but rather HE WAS SELLING THE WHEELBARROWS to make ends meet. "

" In this case, it was the man with a pick-up truck who could haul stuff away home who could steal more than the man with the briefcase OR the gun.... "

" The investigation is under way -- I have no more need to carry on.

The question for which I am now awaiting an answer is: Did this amnesty deal grant immunity from public knowledge, or only from prosecution? And did the person granting the immunity have the authority to grant it, including refusal to provide information under a FOIL request?

If there is no document with names today, it's because someone destroyed it -- I don't believe for a minute no documentation, not even an e-mail, ever existed.

But for now, I can sit back and see for the findings of the investigation. "

" What is the point of beating this to death? The amnesty has been offered and taken and can't be taken back so what is the point? A decision was made and good or bad what can be done now? I personally don't agree with the decision but there are both sides to every arguement. The city mgr did recover city property and may have not had enough information to prosecute. Going forward the citizens of Auburn should demand a better control of keeping the assets of the city secure and monitoring the actions of city employees. The dept heads should be held responsible for any more breaches of trust by their employees. "

" Smith and Graney? lol ! what have either of them done for this city? Graney doesnt work, but spends countless hours milling around the dpw garage! Smith pays a dollar for health insurance and gets his 3 or 4 percent raise every year, but then wants the city workers to pay more for health care and take zeros for raises! Brower should stick to her school, cause shes clueless about the needs of this city! Palesh lies to the people of this city and council to get his raise and contract ext! Nabby is sleeping again! Quill im not sure what hes doing(he knows whats right but seems to not beable to do it)! The state was already coming in to do an investigation when smith and graney jumped on board, alittle late fellas! "
