Another view of council's vote for outside probe

Monday, February 16, 2009 11:02 PM EST

As someone who attended the city council meeting of Feb. 12, 2009, let me give you my take on the unanimous vote for an outside investigation of the DPW. The council is made up of the mayor and four councilors. The only true yes votes were from councilors Smith and Graney.
One other council member's main focus was that they knew nothing of the amnesty until after it was done. However, this council member in the past has indicated that an outside investigation was not needed.

Another council member who apparently looks through rose colored glasses doesn't believe the citizens of Auburn are upset over the amnesty. (apparently doesn't read the letters to the editor either)

The last council member indicated there was no need for an outside investigation just prior to the vote.

So as you can see if the council voted their beliefs on this matter it would have been, Yes - 2 No - 3.

As for the city manager saying he had contacted the agency to do the investigation to alleviate divisiveness among council, I say too little too late, as councilor Smith had already been in contact with them.

I pray that this investigation will determine that there was no special treatment given and all involved in the investigation did everything by the book.

As for there being no names written down to divulge, I personally believe that there has to be at least the two names of individuals who city officials attempted to have warrants issued against in city court.

" Our state tax dollars go to pay for the investigation commission out of NYC whether they investigate here or elsewhere in the State. Why not see some local return on our investment by putting them to work here? "

" If you offered amnesty from prosecution that doesn't mean you can't reveal the names.

Also, the outside agency can look into the appropriateness of the officials offering the amnesty in the first place. "

" If you have offered an amnesty you can't reverse it, so what good is an investigation other than uslessly spending public funds? The city mgrs decision was made to save public funds. So now why waste those funds? "

" Probes cost money. Inhouse investigation was done. Results are being handle. Why spend more or invest more when the results will be the same? Good vote council. Thank you my dollar watchers. "
