SKANEATELES - Since the inception of Reflections Cosmetic & Medical Dermatology, Dr. Jeffrey LaDuca and his staff have strived to offer clients the best possible care in their field.

Elissa Gonsiewski, a state-licensed esthetician, uses a Velashape machine on a client at Reflections Cosmetic & Medical Dermatology in Skaneateles. The Velashape is a non-invasive cellulite reduction tool which increases the metabolism of fat and cellulite.
Recently, along with their already extensive areas of skin care including treatments such as laser surgery, microdermabrasion and massage therapy, Reflections added a cellulite treatment and circumferential reduction called velashape to the options they offer patients.

Elissa Gonsiewski, a New York state licensed esthetician, has handled the treatments for Reflections since LaDuca brought the equipment into the Skaneateles office two months ago.

Prior to adding the treatment to Reflections, both LaDuca and Gonsiewski learned about it from a number of sources.

“I had heard about it,” Gonsiewski said. “I had seen it on TV before. It was something that was big with celebrities. Rachel Ray did something about it, so I had heard about it before Dr. LaDuca asked about bringing it here. We wanted to learn more about it and once we did we thought that it would be a good idea.”

LaDuca became more and more interested in providing the service designed to help reduce cellulite after he researched it.

“It is a brand new technology,” LaDuca said. “It is something different and exciting and we are excited to be able to offer this to our patients.”

This treatment is not an invasive procedure like liposuction. Instead, it deals with the surface of the skin.

Gonsiewski said the machine has various attachments that work on skin over the usual trouble areas such as stomachs and thighs. The staff endorce this procedure because they can do it in a gentle and non-invasive manner in the office.

“Patients might feel a slight pull on their skin,” Gonsiewski said. “But it is a very warm gentle feeling. Most patients have said it feels really nice, kind on like a massage and that it is very relaxing. Basically it helps increase the metabolism of fat and cellulite and drain excess fluids. This is done with heat and suction. It helps to make the area that is being treated a lot smoother.”

The initial steps that lead to treatment begin with LaDuca, who has a preliminary discussion with potential patients, explaining the process and making sure they are good candidates for treatment.

“We'll talk about areas of concern, and what the patient is working toward,” LaDuca said. “This is a good treatment for people who have areas they want to target because they have lost weight after having a baby or they have been exercising more and have lost weight and want to smooth out areas of cellulite. The more someone maintains their weight the less they will have to come back to maintain their treatments.”

After LaDuca and the patient decide on a course of action, Gonsiewski handles the actual treatment because of her background in skin care. The procedures can vary in length depending on the area of the body they are targetting, but people generally can see the results in a matter of weeks.

“People will start to see noticeable improvements pretty fast,” Gonsiewski said. “Usually within four weeks they will see a lot of improvement.”

Some clients might want to come back four to six months later; but that depends on the individual, she said.

The response from clients have been good so far, she added.

“People have been very happy with what they have seen,” Gonsiewski said.

She pointed to the treatment having other benefits. The non-invasive procedure has little to no downtime.

“I think it fits in well with what we are doing here. It is important to take a little time for ourselves, it helps keep us going,” Gonsiewski said. “It is important and it helps keep you happy and it is easy to make the time for something like this.”
