Pat O'Donovan set a personal record, a school record and another meet record as he took first place in the 100 backstroke for the Auburn boys swim team, as the team placed fourth with 232 points in the Section III finals at Nottingham High School Saturday. Weedsport finished 12th with 54 points.

Auburn swimmers, from left, Adam Zelehowsky, 15, his brother Lucas, 17, and Connor Kilmer, 15, cheer on Pat O'Donovan, 18, as he swims the last leg of the 400 freestyle relay during the Section III Championships at Nottingham High School on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons won the relay with a time of 3:15.27, and the team took fourth place overall.
“Fourth was as good as we could finish,” Maroons coach Tom Clary Jr. said. “There were two events we didn't score in and we lack depth.”

Even without a swimmer in the 100 breaststroke or a diver, O'Donovan's backstroke time of 50.10 highlighted a fantastic afternoon for the Maroons. The senior came in 2.41 quicker than West Genesee's Pat O'Donnell, breaking his own two-day old Section III record. It's the fourth straight season that the four-year senior has won the event.

“I was very pleased with him today,” Clary said. “He has bigger things though with states in three weeks.”

Junior Lucas Zelehowsky won the 100 butterfly (52.02), as he will also prepare to compete in the state meet in three weeks. He and O'Donovan will swim in four events after taking home sectional titles in two events each. The Maroons won the 400 freestyle relay for the fourth straight year as Adam Zelehowsky, Connor Kilmer, Lucas Zelehowsky and O'Donovan touched in 3:15.27.

“To end up winning the relay was a nice bonus,” Clary said.

Earning a time good enough to move on to East Meadow on March 6, O'Donovan, Lucas Zelehowsky, Justin Sawran and Kilmer finished second in the 200 medley relay (1:38.64), and Lucas Zelehowsky finished second in the 200 individual medley (1:58.04), while O'Donovan took second in the 50 freestyle (21.61).

“We're just going to get them ready,” Clary said. “I'm very confident with their abilities.”

Brian Roe, Gary Leader, Sawran and Adam guided the Maroons in the 200 freestyle relay, which came in ninth (1:35.33). Adam Zelehowsky finished fifth in the 100 freestyle (49.71) and sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:48.94).

John Tehan took seventh in the 500 freestyle (5:09.95), while Sawran finished ninth (5:14.73). Kilmer finished 10th in the 100 freestyle (50.87) and 12th in the 50 freestyle (23.30). Sawran also came in 13th in the 100 butterfly (58.87). Tehan placed 15th in the 200 freestyle (1:55.18), while Sean Doyle took 20th in the 200 individual medley (2:15.95).

For the Warriors, Nathan Earl finished fifth (57.15) in the 100 backstroke, while Josh Bilger placed ninth in diving (353.20).

Earl, Sean Wignall, Matt Crowley and Logan Thompson finished 11th in the 200 medley relay (1:48.84). Crowley took 12th in the 100 butterfly (58.53), while Earl placed 12th in 100 freestyle (52.05).

Crowley, Mike Reese, Adam Rude and Earl finished 12th in the 400 free relay (3:42.85). Samantha Black, Rude, Jake McDeid and Thompson took 16th in the 200 freestyle relay (1:48.64).

Independently swimming with Auburn, Skaneateles student Reid Swartz finished fourth in the 100 backstroke (56.84) as the Lakers took 13th with 48 points. He will also participate in the state meet. Swartz also finished seventh in the 200 individual medley (2:09.88).

Matt Leverich took seventh in the 200 freestyle (1:51) and ninth in the 100 freestyle (50.38) for the Lakers, while Brian Stokes-Cawley came in 18th in the 50 freestyle (23.53).
