ALBANY -- Senate Republicans say their accounting of proposed tax and fee increases shows a typical New York family would pay $3,300 more under the state budget proposed by Democratic Gov. David Paterson.
They say the breakdown of proposed increases in the cost of entertainment tickets, cell phone use, cable TV, wine and beer, cigars, and automobile expenses shows that funds from a federal stimulus package must first go to eliminating Paterson's tax and fee hikes.
Without Democratic support, the minority Republicans have little chance of forcing the governor to rescind his proposal.
Paterson has proposed what he says is about $4 billion in tax and fee increases to help address a historic fiscal crisis.
