The Weedsport Central School District Board of Education Monday joined an initiative with nine other local school districts to study the feasibility of sharing certain services.
In an unanimous vote, the Weedsport board of education approved a resolution to apply with the Cayuga-Onondaga Board of Cooperative Educational Services and its component districts for a grant that would fund a feasibility study of consolidating some behind-the-scenes services to streamline operations, a measure district leaders believe could provide substantial savings.
Entering this week, Weedsport was the only local district that still needed to vote on the measure.
The grant, which is through the New York State Local Government Efficiency Grant Program, will be examine the creation of a Regional Operations Center. The application deadline is Wednesday. The plan is to use the findings to apply for the 2009-10 New York State Local Government Efficiency Grant Program's 21st Century Demonstration Grant.
The formation of a Regional Operations Center would advance a push towards consolidation that began two years ago with the creation of a shared business office to process payroll and accounts payable. The Central Business Office, under the auspices of BOCES, currently serves six districts -- Auburn, Jordan-Elbridge, Moravia, Port Byron, Southern Cayuga and Union Springs.
