Two Pennsylvania residents were arrested this morning by Cayuga County Sheriff's Office deputies after they were spotted allegedly stealing anhydrous ammonia from a Ledyard farm, the sheriff's office said.
Detectives said Gabriel S. Spencer, 33, and Christine R. Cole, both of Troy, Pa., were interrupted by deputies at 2:30 a.m. as they attempted to steal the substance, which is used by farmers as fertilizer.
The suspects then fled on foot and evaded deputies until they were aprehended at 10:45 a.m. after residents reported seeing suspicious individuals in their area, detectives said.
Deputies were supported by a state police helicopter and K-9 a unit from the Auburn Police Department as they searched for the suspects, detectives said.
Spencer and Cole were both charged with attempted grand larceny in the fourth-degree, a misdemeanor.
Cole is also charged with burglary in the third-degree, a felony, and petit larceny, a misdmeanor, for stealing a sweatshirt out of a resident's garage.
