From one live show to the next, Letizia and the Z Band tend to zig and zag.
The Syracuse five-piece's schedule finds it fluttering between performances at local clubs and private engagements. The transition calls for the group to trade funkier casual attire for tuxedos and a set list of dance covers for one spanning rock and many of its sister genres.
“We'd never do ‘Blue Suede Shoes' or ‘Rock Around the Clock' at clubs,” said singer Letizia.
The band of Letizia, singer/keyboardist Al Dunn, singer/guitarist/saxophonist Mark Angiolillo, drummer John Mangicaro, bassist Bill Weiss and sound engineer Gary Kunkel strives to play an Auburn club once a month. At venues like the Ukrainian National Club, where they will play for the fourth time Friday, Letizia and the Z Band stick to current and classic pop music. Its set lists of mostly cover songs is meant primarily to incite movement in audiences.
The band's second motive, however, is to win the favor of any club-goers who could be searching for musical entertainment for a wedding or private event.
“You have to play where people can come out to see you,” Letizia said. ““We keep out in public as often as possible.”
Though the group sticks closely to central New York for club shows, it travels as far as Buffalo and Albany to perform for private audiences. Over its 11-year career, Letizia and the Z Band has highlighted its history of club and private shows with performances on Imus in the Morning and the Y94 Disco Reunion.
“It's a high energy dance show,” Letizia said. “The people who come out to see us know and expect that they'll be entertained.”
