State police said Michael Morris, 21, of Lower Lake Road, Seneca Falls, was killed after losing control of his westbound two-door Pontiac Sunfire and sliding into the path of an eastbound Ford Taurus being driven by Robert Bishop, 43, of Holley St., Auburn.
The accident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. between Cayuga Road and Short Road.
Police said that both Bishop and his passenger, Geraldine Reed, 66, of Auburn, were both trapped in the car and had to be removed by firefighters from the Aurelius Fire Department.
Morris was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, and Bishop and Reed were both transported to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, complaining of hip and arm pain.
At the accident scene, firefighters said that the cars collided near a sweeping curve in the roadway and that it was initially difficult to determine which car had been traveling in which direction.
Firefighters used hydraulic tools to cut apart the Taurus and remove its roof during the rescue effort.
The two cars rested bumper to bumper on the curb of the eastbound lane, with traffic in both directions constricted to the westbound lane, while troopers investigated the crash for more than two hours.
