Two Cents

I think the head of Auburn's public works ought to be fired --- we all know stuff has been going on for years.

The "Two Cents" starter comments need to be updated more frequently than once a week. The Citizen obviously needs your input!

What's the mayor's big surprise going to be, another McDonalds? What a joke.

Your paper is pretty boring. Drop a bomb in the Middle East, who cares?

Two Cents starter comments will be updated online as new submissions are called in or e-mailed. To contribute new Two Cents items, please call 253-5311 ext. 292 or e-mail twocents@lee.net.

But they do have that "Grandessa" line of "luxury" items, and they do have German specialties, especially at the holidays. I don't generally eat chocolate, but people tell me the chocolate from Aldi is top-notch. "

" That works for me, bone, but we have a long way to go to start reversing the flow of our fiscal resources OUT of the country. I watch how the big corporate agribusinesses around here use cheap and often illegal foreign laborers who send nearly all their wages out of the country -- none of them are creating jobs for Americans.

It's no different than Bill Gates of Microspft demanding those special visa for foreign scientists so he can pay them less than he would an American PhD. Did you know the average salary for a PhD in research science is something like $35,000-$40,000? At the same time the interest and conditions on student loans have gone up and gotten worse. Why should Americans bother to get an education when it will cause them to make LESS money? What happens to our natural human resources if we allow conditions where we are encouraged to be not-as-well-educated as those from other countries? What is wrong with us?

Bill Gates should be denied visas and let him pay workers with advanced degrees a competitive wage which will be enough to support their families AND pay off their student loans instead of exploiting cheap educated labor from other countries, undercutting our home=-grown folks.

I'm all for human "tariffs" as well as tariffs on foreign-produced goods. "

" I was listening to David Patterson this morning, and am asking myself, why the state government does not strive to cut spending. He was gushing about the fact that he only raised taxes as a last resort--and now that we may get some bailout money, he will reconsider. OK---so what happens next year when the state's spending habits have not changed? He's like the young kid who gets a consolidation loan to pay off credit cards, and feels that it is ok to keep spendig because he has a few bucks right now. Taxes will inevitably be raised--no folks, I am not a rocket scientist. I find it hard to believe that New York doesn't have enough talented business minds that actually care. If we were a business, we'd be bankrupt. We need to take a look at other states that have been successful in different areas, bring the ideas back to NY, and enact them.I for one think that the politicians should be taking paycuts due to their failure to perform. They took the jobs under the guise of aspiring to be true public servants. I, for one, have NEVER met a politician who put their district residents first. I defy any politician to show me where he or she has, accross the board, come in, done their job, and left their costituants better off. I'd love a stab at the soon to be vacant senate seat--just a pi$$ed off, regular guy who wants a better life for the next generation. Give the job to me, and I'll donate the salary to charity, and be a thorn in the side of every scumbag politician in NY who blows our money. "

" You know, nature, when I told my mom I was going to try Aldi, she said Yuck! The ones in the Detroit area are awful! But I have had mostly good luck at Aldi -- you do have to learn which things they have are good and which aren't, but once you do, it's a good place to go.

They have sharp cheddar cheese cheaper than anywhere else -- and it's just as good. They consistently have the best pears I have ever had from anywhere. Milk is milk, except it's cheaper at Aldi. I've had good broccoli, excellent portobello mushrooms (huge ones, at a fraction the cost of Wegman's) as well as perfectly good carrots, potatoes, onions and celery. I get my Macintosh apples there too. And I've had good luck with their frozen pork chops, though I prefer to get mine from Farmer Guy when I can. My kids will eat some of their cereals, which saves a lot of money, given the way my "cereal killer" offspring eat the stuff.

The stores in both Auburn and Ithaca are clean snd nice.

There are plenty of people who don't have the luxury of being choosy on a political/philosophical basis regarding where they shop and just have to go where things cost the fewest of their precious dollars. Yes, in the long run that contributes to making the situation worse, but it's usually only those who already HAVE money who can choose to do the right thing that way, at least on a regular basis. I understand and respect the decision not to shop at Walmart, but all my years of hand-to-mouth have left me unwilling to fork out so significantly much more for the same products most of the time, and while my conscience is all in turmoil over that conundrum, I still can't handle crowds, so I shop at 5 AM -- which makes the decision for me -- my choice of where I can shop is very limited at 5 AM. "

First of all they instantly post your comments. There is a filter for language but your comment is instantly readable. If it is found later that your post is not in the bounds of their regulations it is pulled from the comments section whenever they update. This allows an almost complete flow of comments. Also a list is kept of the individual news articles that get the most comments and these are easily accessible for up to a week if the comments are still coming in. It also lets you click a page that has all the comments you have made and gives links to return to those articles and see if there is any more discussion going on. The instant comment feature does not seem to create any more hostility or problems and the instant flow seems to improve the forum. "

I absolutely refuse to shop at the non American Walmart - I would starve b4 I would save a buck there. And Aldi's, omg, when they 1st opened my mother wanted to go and so we did. The few items we purchased were absolutely horrid in that they were tasteless and had a waxy consistency - we understand why they are cheap. However u will c many black cars there as Mennonites shop there. Weggies is by far the most expensive - best produce and specialty items but if u are fore armed with the weekly specials in the ad and coupons, Tops is king for cash savings - but that involves work. I have proved it as math is my thing. If u are a person that likes to actually cook and not buy boxed items for the nuker or for the one pan salt attack - Sauders in SF is great for ingredients although the meat is mostly the nitrate type. Their prices will make u go back again and again. It just sad/frightening that so many are losing their jobs. I wouldn't want to be a low-income family living in Tompkins County because all the marketing people figure the population is more affluent and they jack up the prices of everything.

We have serious issues regarding the destruction and misuse of just about everything out here in "Dodge City."

Our latest fun regards someone who has been putting mobile homes on a piece of property without getting any permits, but no one has been able to figure out so far what to do about it. They are known to be way not up to code with children living in some of them, but each bureaucratic entity just keeps pointing fingers at another and no one with the b*lls to DO something about it. We need some zoning and rental property laws, and after our most recent Town Board meeting, believe me, those are in the works, but not fast enough to reassure the Fire Department which is justifiably worried sick over safety.

Total lack of regulations is as bad or worse than over-regulation, as we've seen with the banking industry, because individuals are as greedy and careless of irresponsible behavior as corporations or government. Really makes me pretty mad, to tell the truth, and you can bet your bippy that these issues WILL be addressed in our plan when we get it moving. "

I have about 6 feet of sidewalk -- between my house and next door -- not attached to anything, and not even covering the full frontage of my property -- very odd.

I'd just like the Town to fill the suddenly growing pothole right across the street where everyone turns around in the school driveway. They have been plowing earlier, but as a tiny side street, we aren't going to be the top priority.

I was thinking about a sign-out to borrow equipment -- I've worked places where people could borrow and return stuff without it being a problem -- but I expect that someone would hollar about it since it's taxpayer money paying for the equipment, not a business. Still, it's a lot better than stealing. "

" brew: I am all for improvements.
BUT one has to think realistic.
the jobs Obama wants to have are all UNIONS, and we see how thats going now.
They control your work status-no different than joining the military.

Repairing roads & bridges is great, providing we ARE not charging more tolls for the next 20 yrs to pay for them--on top of higher taxes to pay for them. Double Jeopardy!
with the PROOF the companies doing them are up to par, not shaving to save their bottom line. Should these companies get caught-they need to pay huge fines.
Also better planning, so roads built today wont be 'tolled/taxed' for 10 yrs, then knocked down to add more lanes.

in my area, they built the '2 mile sidewalk to no where' at a cost of 3 million. Residents of a development petitioned for it. 4 years later they tore it all up to add another lane, residents complained of higher traffic volume.
today there is NO sidewalk, how long will it take the residents to petition again!
Part of an expressway collasped during the final phase, no matter whos fault of what contractor, WE the tax payers are left footing the bill-2ce over. I guess we should be thankful it was on opening day and lives weren't involved-can you imagine the lawsuits?!

here, we have huge developments built with 3-5000 homes. only AFTER they are built the issues of not enough schools, traffic, flooding, environment woes seem to come into fact--DAH to the planners for not seeing this all coming!
now break each issue into smaller issues:
schools: lets say they built 3 major schools near FG's home. Can her roads handle the traffic? they also dont install sidewalks, until a walking child (2 yrs later) is killed, now a lawsuit.
plus the cost of sidewalks at the 3 yr. later costs--more millions.

you call it growth and progress, I call it a band-aid.
EVERYYONE needs to sit at the table, list/fix the TODAYS wrongs, get a better plan then move forward!

or simply rebuild LA, as it is, and wait for the next hurricane. "

" We do not yet have the specifics on the stimulus package so it would be too early to make an educated guess as to whether it will work or not. I don't think the first stimulus package worked, and the first half of the bailout program has no accountability. The financial institutions bailed out either have no idea where the money went or don't want to tell. To act too quickly without more specifics and accountability would be very costly for a long time and possibly not help the recession. "

" CM, improving our infrastructure is a band aid that will last 40 to 50 years. Rebuilding bridges, roads, public buildings is investing in our children's future. Is your resistance to Obama so blind that you can't see the truth. In a poor economy we create jobs and we build long term projects that our children and grandchildren will be able to use. What's the problem? "

cm wrote on Jan 8, 2009 10:09 PM:

" IF and thats a big IF...Obama betters the USA good for him, and good for us..
but lousy for our grandchildren and great grandchildren, for they will PAY the bailouts & stimulous packages in high taxes long after we are gone!

right now under Obama's 'plan' the
full-time worker will get an extra 20.00 a week (less from taxes) that will be enough to cover the new gas prices @ 1.75 here and rising.

the billions it saves now will not only cut social security, education, medical, and infrastructure but it will cost TRILLIONS for the next generations to PAY BACK!
it is not a win-win..
merely a band-aid! "

cm honestly lately your posts! "choking on their peanuts'? really? Obama shows grand intelligence in seeking the knowledge of those that preceded him even if one is the creator of his supreme disaster job at hand. Dont forget Carter and Bill were 50% of the lunch crowd and THERE is where the questions of actual prezing took place. Obama most likely asked the Bushes stuff like the best golf course nearby, how many times did Barney the dog crap on the floor, and perhaps how much is one of those new plates valued at that ol' Barbie just bought? I beleive you should be the one choking on your peanuts (I personally dont eat) because u should feel blessed that there is actually someone out there that wants to clean up the Bush mess...no small task...no sir!!
