Jeremy Boyer: Photogs deserve praise for their work

A letter to the editor came in Monday that expressed appreciation for our team of staff photographers, calling our special section of the best photos from the past year “a long overdue tribute.”
I certainly agree, and we plan to make the year-end photos section an annual tradition.

That section, in case you missed, was included in Sunday's year-in-review edition of The Citizen. It was a 16-page section featuring a range of compelling photography from the three full-time photojournalists we employ: Jill Connor, Chet Susslin and Sam Tenney.

There were images from local sporting events that made you feel like you were inches away, hearing the sounds of the moment loud and clear. Other images came from community events, such as fairs or children's entertainment programs, that fill your heart with small-town community pride. And of course there was the human drama from news events such as fires and protests.

Each of our photographers takes the job seriously, and they all approach every assignment with the singular goal of telling a story through their images.

What many readers probably don't realize is all the technical and logistical challenges that go into the job.

For starters, there's the challenge of time. Our photojournalists are always on the go, so they often have limited time. Between the three of them, they are shooting photos (and now video) for all three sections of The Citizen each day (news, sports and features), plus our weekly Go entertainment guide and the Skaneateles Journal, a sister publication.

That means when the photographers get to their assignments, they have to be focused as soon as they pick up the camera.

Photojournalism also requires a tremendous range of technical skills. A photographer might shoot an outdoor ceremony on a sunny day one minute (lots of light and a minimum amount of motion) and then be inside a dim gymnasium shooting a basketball game the next (dark background with lots of action). In either case, they have to come back with photographs that command attention and tell a story.

Overwhelmingly, our photographers manage these challenges graciously. And their work speaks for itself.

For those who missed the year-in-review section, I encourage you to check out our 2008 Best of Photography slideshow online at auburnpub.com/slideshows. You'll see close to 50 images in there that will amaze you.

What you won't see are the scores of additional images that ultimately did not make the cut for this year-in-review product. We had to make some cuts, but they weren't easy, that's for sure.
