For those who have always wanted to participate in the film industry but never had the chance, now is the time to get your director's hat and come to Creekside Books & Coffee.
The Syracuse Film Festival will host its annual prescreening Saturday to allow members of the community to help select films for 2009's festival.
The purpose of the prescreenings is to give people an opportunity to participate in the selection process as well as to see how difficult the process is, festival co-founder Owen Shapiro said.
“It lets them in on the ground floor of how the whole selection process works,” Shapiro said. “It helps people feel that they are part of the festival, which in fact they are.”
Shapiro's favorite part of the prescreening is the selection of the films and “having people meet each other and engage in cultural, artistic and social space.”
Organizers will screen approximately seven short films ranging from five to 30 minutes Saturday, and the audience will have a chance to discuss, ask questions, and give feedback on whether any of the films should be included in this year's festival.
The festival itself will run from April 24 through May 3 and usually takes place at a few venues in downtown Syracuse.
Shapiro believes this type of cultural festival brings many benefits to the community.
“It shines an international spotlight on central New York. We're bringing in films that people would otherwise never see, from probably about 30 countries. It gives people a chance ... to discuss the films,” he said. “There's also an economic benefit from having people come from out of our area and spend money. ... We're working to help generate a new kind of economic engine.”
This will be the sixth year of the festival, Shapiro said, and the film series has done well throughout the past years.
“The festival has, over the first five years, garnered a pretty substantial reputation,” he said.
Shapiro believes the attendees make the festival as successful as it is.
“I think it's the people who come,” he said, “the filmmakers and the special guests.”
