Don't shut down because it is winter. I know that it is Central New York. Many days the roads are slippery and the sidewalks aren't perfect. I still don't think it is an excuse to stop being healthy. Many local places offer workout facilities so that you can keep it going through the cold months. I myself like nature. If you are one of those then there are still some things you can do to keep on running this winter here in Auburn. My top five tips for the winter walking/running season are:
#&149; Pay attention to the forecast. Will it be warmer during certain points of the day that fit your schedule? Also pay attention to what I call “LCAs” - lack of clearing areas.
For example, I run five times a week out to the lake area. The Lake Avenue bridge is the worst spot in the city and many times you have to run into the road, which can be hazardous. If you don't feel safe, then walk through the area. It also makes me feel bad for those school kids that are walking in the road.
#&149; Wear bright colors. Wearing bright and reflective clothing makes you visible to cars. Don't ever assume a car sees you. Always assume they don't see you and make eye contact if you can. Wear reflective clothing or wear a light. A good example is the “Be seen, Be Green” lights offered by Eat Well Play Hard.
#&149; Don't wear an iPod. Never wear an iPod or other musical device in this weather. It will dull your senses and you will not be able to hear car horns. IPod's have been banned at USATF events due to accidents they were causing during events. Assume the same risk out there with yourself
#&149; Dress in layers. Wear something safe and comfortable. I do not have the money for winter running accessories, so I make do. I wear bags over my socks to keep moisture out. I wear double layer clothing, whatever I can find that keeps the skin from being exposed.
#&149; Find a route that works for you. Find a route that you know the patterns, a place where you are confident about the traffic and road conditions. Walkers and runners are an afterthought during the plowing season. So find a place that is clear and is safe from slips and falls. There are many great places where you can get online and map out walking/running routes.
Thank you all for your time. So far my campaign has raised $800 and we still have a way to go! Anyone still interested in being a sponsor go to http://www.therun4life.org. All proceeds go to a 501c3 non-profit organization and are tax deductible! Help save a child's life today!
