A Fulton woman is asking for donations to send a Lost Boy of Sudan who is currently living in Syracuse back to his homeland to be reunited with his parents.
Beth Knight is trying to raise $12,000 to send Dominic Mathiang to Sudan for three months to see both his parents for the first time in more than 20 years.
In 1988 at the age of 8, Mathiang was kidnapped at gun- and knife-point from his family and taken away from his native village of Prinychuk, Sudan, during the heart of a civil war. Traveling on foot for several thousand miles, Mathiang and other orphaned children eventually arrived at a refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya, where he lived until he moved to Syracuse in 2004.
He learned that his parents were still alive a year later and has since been sending money to them for support.
He has been active in the community since arriving in the United States, most recently participating in the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center's Schweinfest in October.
Knight, who has become Mathiang's adopted American mother, has set up a fund in his name at Fulton Savings Bank's main headquarters and is asking for donations to help Mathiang reunite with his family.
Donations can be mailed to the bank, 75 South First St., Fulton, NY 13069-1750. For more information, contact Knight at 592-5004 or Mathiang at 383-5779 or mathiangson@yahoo.com.
