It's not often that a team can win big without its two best athletes, but the Auburn boys swim team proved the talent of its depth at the Auburn YMCA-WEIU on Friday.
The Maroons won all nine events they competed in, without Pat O'Donovan or Lucas Zelehowsky in any first-place slot to beat Cicero-North Syracuse 89-74 for the home team's 35th straight dual meet win.
“This was a really good meet for us,” Maroons coach Tom Clary Jr. said.
Justin Sawran and Connor Kilmer got the chance to take centerstage, winning three events each, while two other swimmers earned personal bests in their events - and one newcomer will be competing in sectionals for the first time.
Sawran won the 200 individual medley (2:15.34), 100 butterfly (1:00.32) and swam the second leg of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:42.34) with Brian Roe, Gary Leader and Kilmer. With a second-place finish behind Sawran in the 100 butterfly, Leader (1:11.10) earned a lifetime best time.
Pat Stephens, Sean Doyle, Leader and Roe won the 200 medley relay (1:58.89), while John Tehan took the 200 freestyle (2:02.77) and 500 freestyle (5:22.42) and Stephens came in first in the 100 backstroke (1:07.46). Kilmer took first in 50 freestyle (23.65) and the 100 freestyle (53.33).
Auburn won the top three spots in two events - the 200 freestyle when Kieran Cotter took second (2:12.48) and Ian Molloy came in third with a lifetime best time of 2:20.58. In the 100 freestyle, Roe took second (57.97) and Cotter, a freshman, earned a spot in the Section III competition with a third-place finish of 58.79. Matt Warner, Doyle, Cotter and Tehan took second in the 200 freestyle (1:45.82) and Doyle took second in the 200 IM (2:25.80).
Auburn (5-0) hosts Baldwinsville on Friday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Moravia 75, Marathon 59
Pat Mott racked up 29 points and nine rebounds to lead the Blue Devils in a big rebound win. Jeremy Stewart converted 20 points and four steals, while Dillon Langtry racked up 10 points and TJ Powers scored eight.
The Blue Devils (7-3) host Spencer-Van Etten on Tuesday.
Cazenovia 67, Jordan-Elbridge 63
Despite a 33-29 halftime lead, the Eagles weren't able to hold on for their second win of the season.
Tom Graf scored 15 points and had five boards, Bobby Gallager recorded 13 points, and Teddy Hart had 10 points and six rebounds. Christian Berwind contributed seven points and seven rebounds, while Matt Simmons and Mitch Merrill each had seven points.
Jordan-Elbridge hosts Cato-Meridian on Monday.
Newfield 54, Union Springs 37
Jim Burns led the Wolves with 13 points, while Nate Markham tallied seven.
Union Springs (4-6) hosts Lansing on Tuesday.
Onondaga 67, Weedsport 50
Jordan Stott scored 11 points, while PJ Piascik contributed 10.
The Warriors (6-3 overall, 4-3 league) travel to Manlius Pebble Hill on Monday.
Faith Heritage 65, Port Byron 54
Tommy Giannettino tallied 14 points in the loss, while Jacob Ross scored 11, Matt Warner had eight and Robert Yeomans grabbed nine rebounds.
The Panthers (3-5) travel to Fabius Pompey on Wednesday.
Groton 79, Southern Cayuga 51
Sean Driscoll led the Chiefs with 19 points, while Bryan VanNorstrand had 10.
The Chiefs (2-7) host Tioga on Thursday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Moravia 49, Marathon 22
Maria Heffernan may not have led her team in points (eight), but defensively, she stole the show for the Blue Devils - racking up seven rebounds, seven assists, five steals and one block in her team's win.
Moravia (4-5 overall, 3-1 division) commanded a 20-5 lead after the first quarter and a 32-11 advantage by the half.
Deanna Drake piled on 14 points, Claire Hunsinger scored 10 and Haley Potter had six and five assists.
The Blue Devils head to Spencer-Van Etten on Tuesday.
Union Springs 49, Newfield 46
Casey Emmett led the Wolves with 15 points, while Molly Clifford and Jaimi Jones each had 10. With six seconds left in regulation Clifford hit two free throws to seal the win.
Union Springs (5-5 overall, 4-1 IAC) heads to Lansing on Thursday.
VOLLEYBALL
Onondaga 3, Cato-Meridian 1
Rebecca Myers tallied two kills, six assists, one block and one dig in the Blue Devils' 12-25, 25-15, 21-25, 20-25 loss. Megan O'Keefe recorded three kills and two blocks, Sarah Cartwright managed five kills and Janea Parsons scored two kills in the loss.
Cato-Meridian 3-5 host Pulaski on Monday.
