Officials from the Skaneateles Village Board of Trustees, Skaneateles Police Department and a building committee have all stressed the need for constructing a new police station, but despite their campaign to educate the public, that won't happen this year.
While those leaders stand by the necessity for a modern and secure building for the police, financially, this isn't the right time, they say.
In a press release issued Wednesday from Skaneateles Mayor Bob Green and the rest of the board, they stated the project committee worked hard to complete designs for the project, but those plans point to an estimated cost of more than $500,000, a goal the committee set for the undertaking.
“Due to site preparation costs, the project is impractical and not cost effective to continue at this time,” according to the press release.
Police Chief Lloyd Perkins said he was disappointed, but that he understands the village's decision to shelve the project during this depressed economy.
The next step is to re-examine the Fennell Street building to see what the village can do to find short-term solutions to the building's numerous issues.
