OSWEGO - In the midst of a loss, it was difficult to celebrate a rare milestone, but Kelly Grinnell deserved the moment. After she sank the first of two foul shots in the fourth quarter against Oswego on Tuesday, the Auburn girls basketball standout was able to take the spotlight as she became one of just three Maroons to hit the 1,000 career points milestone in Auburn girls basketball history.
“It was so much pressure, I wasn't even thinking about it during the game, honestly,” said Grinnell, a senior. “We've been having some pretty tough losses lately and I was glad to get it out of the way.”
Auburn fell to the state-ranked Bucs 69-33, but Grinnell, who needed nine points to eclipse 1,000, led the Maroons with 10 on the night after she hit her second foul shot.
Oswego coach Phil Reed was accommodating in helping a division rival celebrate a milestone on his court, especially since it was one familiar to him. His daughter, Carrie who recently signed a Division I letter of intent to play basketball for New Hampshire, cashed in her 1,000 career points a couple of weeks ago.
“They stopped the game for us, which was a really classy thing to do on a visitor's court,” Maroons coach Gary Grinnell said. “But as nice as they were, they still didn't want it to happen there.”
For Kelly Grinnell, the mark was one that she had been dreaming about since she was a freshman, but one that she is now glad is over.
“It's a really great feeling (being one of three in Auburn history),” she said. “It's been a goal of mine for a few years now, but now I'm glad that we can focus on our team and get back to winning games.”
