New York state unfairly taxing the middle class

Tuesday, January 6, 2009 11:45 PM EST

My son from Virginia wrote a letter to you in a response to what our governor is doing to our state. It's sad to see the dwindling of the “middle class,” but thanks to our governor I feel he is doing just that.
I joined Auburn Steel in 1976 and for 28 years I raised four children and supported six. I have worked my butt off, sometimes double shifts just to take care of my family, just as a lot of folks have. I don't consider myself any more special than the next man or woman.

In 2005 I retired from Auburn Steel-Nucor Steel and now am employed as a security guard at Auburn Memorial Hospital. I no longer make the money I made at the steel mill and there is only my wife and myself. That still doesn't make me any less of a man. What is happening now is that the programs available from our state and federal government help keep me as well as probably a lot of other families a little above water. Basically just off the welfare rolls.

Now our governor wants to take the STAR program away, proper education away, unfair taxes again taxing the middle class and a tax he calls obesity tax and a gasoline tax as well as other taxes, I'm sure targeting the middle class. I don't hear our pathetic Albany representatives saying to our beloved governor that they will take a $10,000 or $12,000 a year cut in pay to help our beloved New York state. I don't see them stepping up to the plate and saying no to our governor when it comes to taxing the overtaxed middle class people again, again and again.

I'm not opposed to a state sales tax hike in the items we purchase at the store because that affects all people, no matter what class they are categorized in - people. it's time we said no more taxes unless they are fair to all people in New York state.

" Hmmm, noone talking about the illegal Afghan or Iraq wars? Getting out of those would save us a bundle, but noone seems to get it. "

" Well said Dad. I may be out of the area, but I'm not oblivious to the situation. I have to agree with casualabserver though. It's the Government that is actually controlling the poverty level and NY is actually famous for creating NEW programs that you can "take advantage of". Unfortunately, what they aren't telling you is that they are the reason you need these programs. Highes taxes on residents, highest tobacco tax, highest small business taxes, and highest 1099 taxes in the county, thus making it impossible for new business to succeed, and more difficult for old business to sustain. They have been limiting opportunities for years, it's just that Patterson thinks we all as blind as him. Now we see it. LET'S DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Petitions, letters to local, you name it. I live 30 minutes from DC- GET 5 THOUSAND NAMES AND 100 BUSINESSES TO SIGN IT- I WILL DROP IT OFF!!!!!!!! Love ya Pops- Keep your chin up. You know I got you. :) "

" Right On, Bill. That's the whole issue with this state and the country as a whole. Goverment no longer enforces freedom. Government IS a Corporation, plain and simple. It's been a long time practice to take from us to support the rich and developed. We are the only ones that feel any pinch. Gov Patterson is doing what he thinks is needed and is wrong at doing most of it. Of course his people won't see that. There's no way Albany hot shots will offer to take a pay cut. Things like this are should be demanded by people like us. The American middle class are the real Americans. We are the ones that built her, we're the only ones that go to war to defend her. we're the factory workers, the custodians, the bus drivers, the construction workers, and so on.
Anyway, Patterson is only hurting his own chances for a possible future with the raping of the middle class pockets. I sure won't vote for him! "

" Bill- You're a voice in the wilderness. what nobody wants to admit (especially the libs) is that the reason things in NY are so bad is the COST OF THE GOVERNMENT!!!! If programs were reduced for people on welfare, if public schools were made to be fiscally responsible (no automatic raises across the board) and if public services were non-unionized, we wouldn't need the STAR program, we wouldn't need IC, we wouldn't need every big government, new deal program.... people could actually afford to live and raise families etc. In your house, I'd be willing to bet you didn't borrow money every time you needed more (like the government) you spent less, and SAVED a little more. Bill, we're surrounded by idiots... As Bill B always says "It's your money" "
