Society too presumptuous about computer access

Tuesday, January 6, 2009 11:45 PM EST

I feel many residents would agree with me and my complaint about news items, magazine references, TV programs with interesting subject matter, etc. that the ordinary citizen would like to look into for further information but do not have a computer, and a computer Web site is the only place to get further information.
I understand from an experience today that the library and post offices will no longer have income tax forms and they can only be obtained on the computer. Goodness, what about us who have no computer but have an interest in or need a copy of something read, seen on TV or otherwise? Why do all outlets assume that everyone has a computer?

I know probably 90 percent of people have access to one, but what about the rest of us. Very unfair I would say. How about giving us an 800 phone number or an address where we might obtain further information about the subject matter.

" There was talk about a cheap laptop computer that was to be marketed to third world nations. It would sell for about $150 to $199. Maybe this should be marketed in the US for low income homes.
Also just as a footnote the state of Maine has a program where every student gets a laptop computer for home use. "

" Technology changes our lives, not always for the best for all of us. The internet is becoming like the telephone and everyone will likely need access just to do day to day business. Technology can ultimately save our race if we wise up to its potential and use it to boost our standard of living out of the "traditions" of the 20th century. "

" Just about all libraries have free public access to the Internet for those who can't afford it, and they usually also have training for people who don't know how to use it, or they are also places where you can find a librarian to help you find the information you need -- that's what public libraries are all about.

Internet access at home is one of the most telling areas that show up the divide between haves and have-nots in this country, but libraries are working hard to do their part to give access to everyone. "
