Yvonne Hassett, artistic director for the performance, said the event will feature nearly 35 alumni returning to perform the company's program, with several others coming back from colleges or careers to watch. The list of alumni will include former students and faculty members who have gone on to perform or work for different dance companies and studies throughout the nation.

Even professional choreographers will be in the audience to see their own work in action.

“We want to celebrate the success of the program and the people who have been involved with it,” Hassett said. “This will be sort of like a family reunion for us. And the audience will get to see the choreography that was provided by professional dance companies from all over that several of our students have gone on to work with. For children to see former students going on to great things shows them that they can do it too.”

Because the dance routines were designed by well known choreographers, Hassett said the audience will get a chance to see a professional show without leaving Auburn. While the audience enjoys dance moves, they will also be exposed to a variety of artistic styles ranging from contemporary or jazz to modern dance.

To increase the audience's experience, Hassett said they are designing the stage to include the audience instead of separating them from the performers.

“The audience is a part of this performance; we are designing the stage to put them right in the action,” Hassett said. “The audience will be able to participate on a whole new level. We want to include them. ... We really want people to come out to see and experience this kind of show.”

Because the “Roots” theme focuses on the idea of family, Hassett said the performance will appeal to children and adults of any age, and will serve as a reminder of why people still love to dance.

“This show is targeted at everyone from teenagers and young adults on up,” Hassett said. “It's a professional, high-caliber show that will be entertaining to anyone regardless of dance experience. This is not a recital, this is a dance concert like one you would see in a big city like New York City or Chicago. We look at this like any other presentation of art. Each audience member will experience something different. It's technical and physical artistry.”
