Rothenburg scores 21 in losing effort

The Cato-Meridian boys basketball team lost its second game in a row after starting the season 7-0, falling 76-63 to Tully in overtime.
A.J. Rothenburg led the Blue Devils with 21 points while Preston Dennison added 14 points.

Tully led 26-24 at the half and kept it close until a rally of free throws sealed the win in the extra session.

“Thirteen of the 18 points Tully scored in overtime were free throws,” Cato-Meridian coach Ryan Brunelle said.

Tully attempted a total of 40 free throws in the game.

The Blue Devils are looking forward to stopping the losing streak and regaining some of its early-season confidence.

“I think this sparked something in us,” Brunelle said. “Maybe this was a little wake up-call for us.”

Cato-Meridian (7-2) hosts Fabius Pompey Wednesday.

LaFayette 39, Weedsport 27

Sean Ashby recorded 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Warriors while Justin Rose added 10 points and eight rebounds.

“We had a lot of offensive problems,” Weedsport coach Matt Lipiska said. “We didn't finish very well and the guards just didn't attack the basket.”

The Warriors (6-2) host Manlius Pebble Hill Wednesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Port Byron 64, LaFayette 40

Kaitlynne Knapp led the Panthers with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Nica Dare added 15 points and Ali Short finished with 13 points.

The JV team also defeated LaFayette, 41-29 with Kelly Wegman tallying 15 points and Jessica Massey posting 12 points.
