CATO - If breakfast really is the most important meal of the day, then several residents got off to a great start at the Labuff Cole American Legion's pancake breakfast on Sunday.
Eggs, sausage, potatoes, muffins, coffee, juice and pancakes were delivered by waiters and waitresses to nearly 300 visitors who came out to enjoy the monthly event, which helps raise money for several of the legion's activities and scholarships.
“We have been coming here for the longest time after church,” said Addie Caywood, of Red Creek. “We keep coming back because this food is so good and the people are so nice and we really like the entertainment.”
As he delivered a tray with eight drinks, Cato resident Harry Sowles stopped to joke around with his patrons. With nearly 25 years of experience working for the breakfast, Sowles said the event has become a way for people to get a cheap breakfast while enjoying a friendly atmosphere and personal service.
“We seat them and wait on them. People don't get service like this at a lot of other pancake breakfasts,” Sowles said. “It's just a very friendly atmosphere here. You get to see a lot of the same people and talk and joke with them, make them laugh and have a good time.”
And with a variety of foods available at the buffet, Sowles said some people come up from cities and villages as far away as Auburn or Skaneateles to enjoy a cheap meal.
“People love coming because its all you can eat, and we definitely have a few people who can put the food away pretty good,” Sowles said.
Ginny Kachurak, of Red Creek, said going to the breakfast after church has become a Sunday morning tradition for her and several other people from her church. Part of that tradition involves stopping to say hello to familiar faces that the group has come to recognize over the years.
“It's the atmosphere, and you run into the same people here every month,” Kachurak said. “A lot of people here keep coming back like us. We are all repeat offenders.”
