Port Byron's Caleb Green took first place overall in the 112-pound weight class for the second straight year at the Port Byron Invitational Saturday. The Panthers took 11th as a team, while North Rose-Wolcott won the tournament. Cazenovia took second and Hannibal finished third.
Green went 3-0 on the day.

“Caleb wrestled well today,” Panthers coach Tom Green said. “He really wrestled well in the finals.”

To earn his second title, Green defeated Jose Wells of Cazenovia by a 7-0 decision. The Panthers' Mitch Janes (119 pounds) finished 3-1 to earn third place. Ryan Eldridge (152) went 2-2, and Eric Urwin (130) went 3-2 as each finished sixth in their class.

Eldridge's key pin came in overtime of the first round to stay alive in the tournament.

“Our team wrestled well overall today,” Tom Green said. “They kept showing improvements. It's nice to know we can battle with some of the bigger schools.”

Janes and Caleb Green are key contributors on the year for the Panthers. Caleb Green is 17-1 overall, while Janes is 16-3.

“It's very helpful having their success,” Tom Green said. “It kind of gets the other wrestlers to want to improve.”

Port Byron (6-9) travels to Onondaga Wednesday.

“We'll continue what we keep doing,” Tom said. “We'll go over what we need to and work on a few minor things this week.”

Adam Malenick (140) and Justin Quimby (189) also won a match for Port Byron.

Ryan Barta (171) helped Southern Cayuga take 10th overall at the tournament as he took first in his weight class with a 3-0 record. Jeremy Marsh (160) came in third as he went 3-1, while Ryan Gill (125) went 2-2 to earn fifth-place honors.

“I was very proud of Gill to take fifth today,” Chiefs coach Aaron Brozon said. “He's one of our freshman and to see him finish like that is nice.”

Jake Quill (103) went 1-3 to finish sixth overall in his class. The Chiefs wrestled with a few upperclassmen missing.

“(The upperclassmen) would like to have done better,” Brozon said. “However I was pleased with our performance today. It's a tough tournament. There are a lot of tough schools that come. We wrestled against a lot of higher sectional schools we normally wouldn't go up against.”

Union Springs finished 14th overall as Andy Klock (135) went 3-1 to finished third. Tom Weir (215) went 2-2 to take fifth.

The Wolves' Matt Pinckney (145), Rich Thurston (140) and Justin Gulbe (152) each won a match.

Union Springs (1-8) hosts Spencer Van-Etten Wednesday.
